4 Cycle Options for Sprint Kart

I'm researching engines for an older sprint chassis that I have. Have been running a Yamaha KT 100 on it and was wondering what my 4 cycle options and performance wise, how the different 4 stroke engines would stack up against the Yamaha.

It seems like my choices are World Formula, clone and Amimal? I also saw that some people are using a Harbor Frieght Predator engine...any others to consider?

Just want something reliable that can get me around the track to have some fun. Don't care if I have a class to race it in. I know these engines in general have lower horspower in the unmodified state than the Yamaha but I think the additional torque would make them fun to drive.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Joe,

You are right that torque makes for a lot of fun on tight sprint tracks. If you're looking for a reliable engine with comparable power to the KT I would suggest a World Formula.

You can modify the Harbor Freight engines but if you want to be able to run pump gas and not spend a lot of time tuning, the WF would definitely be my motor of choice....

Also, if you ever do want to race finding a class for modified engines can be tough. Clones and the Briggs LO206 will get you around the track but not anywhere near as quick as the WF. If you want lower cost though I would go with the LO206 because it can be built into a stock Animal without too much work and you'll have nearly as much as the WF power wise. The clone can be modified too but modified clone classes don't seem to have taken off in sprint racing and you can't use one to build an F200.

I've built all these engines and many more and I really do think the WF is the best value out there. Plus, it comes with electric start. Very Happy

If uou want reliable go with the KPV3. After 2-1/2 seasons, just pulled mine off teh Intrepid becuase it was only turing 14,000 RPM. Put my fresh spare engne on the kart Sun. It only cost me $650. If you want a few more HP, put the 4 pipe on.

There is a chance of building a class at OVRP for 100's, unlikley for 4 cycle.

We have been running Yf200 Yamaha 4/ engines built to F200 spec.
Make 17-18 hp and have proven to be really durable.

IIRC, Comet's new chassis can double as 2cycle or 4cycle...
