I ride a 2012 KTM300xc and love it! The engine is a tractor and would make the completely wrong power for a kart. It is fantastic for bush riding though;). This bike is a goat:) climbs everything. It has been the same engine since 2008 with the only addition being the electric start. Their power valve system is very sophisticated, but would limit exhaust port height required to be made into a road racer. _________________ Riley Will

Haven't seen one in person myself. Nobody I know well can afford a $12K dirtbike. Hell we still ride old Can Ams we pickup for $400 on ebay. Riley: You are a brilliant engineer. I'm sure you know well revs are sexy but in the right hands, torque wins races. If its got as much grunt as all the reviews say, the thing would be a rocket lugging the tallest gear anyone in karting has seen around Daytona at 9K. And last forever doing it:)
Speaking of engineering, anyway such a starter similar to that could be fitted to existing Superkart engines? Remember Sebastian D. spent a gazillion dollars and a lot of hours all around the original premise that he hated external starters. I don't think any of us like them. First person who can make some kind of ring gear for the ignition rotors and a starter package retrofit kit would likely sell more than a few units.........

KTM starters on the 4 strokes work very well, on the 2 strokes not so good, they require attention to keep them working but I do love my $12K KTM.
question is, would you trust a a jobber crank kit? |

If you're talking about a starter.....From Riley??? You betcha.
If you're talking the HotRods (Wiseco) crankshaft kits, haven't had a failure yet. Nice pieces and they almost always come from the factory about as true as MOST shops can get one. When they are $260 for a NEW crank assy why even bother rebuilding the old ones?

FYI, I bought my 2012 new for $7800. These bikes can be had from $3k on up for an 08' to new.
George, having revs allows for a wider useful power band. Yes it would be ok at 9k rpm, but being able to spin it to 10k would improve acceleration due to shorter gearing. Looks like you need to do one to prove your point;). _________________ Riley Will

Riley: Question. You said the powervalve keeps the exhaust port height too low. Is it a barrel like Yamaha used? If so can't it be cut? I know I have to cut the tops of the barrel valves on my RZs to get desired height at full open...........
Regarding torque versus revs, you've got 6 gears, why not use them? I also can't help but think of how well the freight train Chonda clones are doing in UAS right now. Yeah, it's oval racing and we're talking long track road racing but several guys with a pair of Chondas which can't rev nearly as high as the 2ts and don't have near the peak HP are consistently running in front of their sexier cousins....
Also, remember the old 10 and 12 speed 125GPs? What was their power band range? About 100-200rpms? They looked mighty quick with the right (extremely busy) riders ... |

My BRC150ww is spanking everything including the freight train clones and 450 4-strokes. Wish they would let me do an inline twin with gutted tranny, Buller clutch in place of mine, running methanol. Essentially a 250cc freight train 2-stroke...
The KTM300's power valve also controls the sub exhaust and widening them is not an option. I could take the cylinder to only 85% of its potential. _________________ Riley Will
