Seriously? As Most stands I see are WAAAY overpriced. I mean, 1,200 for a stand that jacks? or even 200 for a vertical kart stand?
Next Month I am definitely going to experiment with making my own, both a jacking stand, As well as a design I have already drawn up. Its a horizontal stands, that will lay into a vertical stand. It will roll straight up to the backof my truck with a crank mechanism lifting it up to be a secure hitch rack.
For now, Just start with a jacking stand. Cheap Old car battery, and a cheap winch from harbor freight. $30 in steel with left over, and maybe $30 in rubber wheels and tires.
Anyone else build theirs? Show me! Lets share some Ideas and tips/tricks.
I know mine sounds complicated, But my brother fabricates desert racing trucks (mostly 1400, and 1450 class prerunners) here in Phoenix AZ. with his help we could practically make it fly...... |

Many have tried, some with great results.
When I started out in the 1970's my dad built the one we used. Couldn't buy them back then but I'm sure he would have if he could. My dad built an airplane in our garage so the stand was easy but the time it took was time we couldn't spend working on the kart....
If you search the site I'm sure you'll find lots of posts. If you're new to fabrication I'd suggest starting with a simple X design before you get into motors and stuff. That way you'll have something to use while you're perfecting your design.
Streeter, KartLift, and the others do a fine job and once you finish your project I'm sure you'll understand why they charge what they do.

Fab'ing has been in the family for a long time. As mentioned my brother makes tube chassis desert trucks. These stands would be cake!
Ps, helped my uncle build his Lancair Legacy... its all composite, but I too have been part of a homebuilt kit plane! |

Good luck with the stand....
I used to live in Mesa so I know this is your off season to get projects done. You might want to check in with Benn Herr out there, he's built some pretty nice karts.

you must have a lot of time and capacity for this. Myself it's much more efficient to buy what's out there. but then, I know people building their own karts now, with much success.
I don't have any tips on doing it but a convenient way to tote the following to the grid would be a plus. Starter, ties, spark plug and plug wrench, 10 mm wrench, 13 mm wrench, 5 mm allen, 6 mm allen, tire gauge, gloves, neck collar, helmet. give me time, I'll think of more.

The following is why I don't think building a stand that I WANT is easy.
List of features:
Small
Light
Wheeled
No lifting/shoving/etc. to get kart into lifting position or removing from stand.
Folds flat to go under kart in trailer/truck bed.
Electric powered or manual but not requiring much muscle or time to operate.
Options:
Carrying capacity for tools, etc.
Powered with standing platform and steering to "drive" it to grid (yep, I'm lazy).
Someday I MAY solve this puzzle and then I'll build one. Until then, I'm using a standard $200.00 roll around stand and a push bar to get the kart to/from the grid and around the pits. (I have a small caster that lifts the LR tire slightly off the ground and makes turning easy.) |

| With my back no longer a Crane . And like walking around more than, spending time with Doctor and Bone Breaker. Any type of Lift/Stand you can come up with is great. That's what I like to see! So your hooks I imagine are on the backside where the cable connects? You just lift the rear of the kart and then the stand does the rest by rotating right?
I was thinking something like a scissor lift for mine kind of just jack it up like an A frame.
For now I'm keeping it simple, one stand, and one vertical, the vertical will be made to attach to a trailer hitch receiver. Later I would like to start on one that would do all 3. But we'll see. |

But we'll see. | Hi Justin bumper hooks can be plate steel or in my case 2" tube with a section cut out to allow hooking bumper. Being that i spent a large part of last year trying to get back to work with help of two Doctors and a Bone Breaker . I leave nothing to chance with my back. As they have told me, you well never be what you were before wrecking you back. We can only help you to try and not revert to what happen to you and your back . It is funny how part of your body has it's own zip code and mind. It can be one lift or in my case years of wear and tare. I can think back to the dumb stuff two 60lb bags ready mix on my shoulders foot racing up and down job site for who buys beer. Hauling 15ft train track section to scrap yard to pay my rent. loading lumber trucks for delivery by hand. It's all fun till it all goes number and tingley . And just stays that way. The type of lift you see on Google/You tube all work with the same motion . A scissor lift is going take much more mechanic's and end up weighing a lot more than you want . There a few lifts being sold, but you have the ability and access to a fab shop. What do you have to lose a pile of steel? a dent in your wallet . A lesson learned In the fab world . A young man with time on his hands It would not be the first time a better mouse trap was invented . |

Most, not all, but most of the home-built kart stands I've seen have been so understrength as to be borderline dangerous (as in potentially collapsing under the weight of a kart, dropping a couple hundred pounds randomly on feet, legs, hands, small children, etc).
Don't skimp - make it stronger than you think it needs to be.

...because Harbor Freight is known for their quality. Knowing them, the 500 pounds probably refers to the total weight this thing could lift in it's lifetime. Meaning it'll drop your kart on the 3rd try.

Well I never intended to start a debate about it. But I know for a fact that for about $200-$250 I can make a kart stand just as nice as that stand that cost $1,200......
I am not saying their time, or quality isn't worth it. I just know from my stand point my brother and I have made front end suspension kits fully boxed top and bottom A-frame for 1,200 that has a hell of a lot more steel, cromoly actually, high end heim joints, and fully cad engineered to give a 95-2000 ford ranger 19" of front wheel travel in the roughest of the desert environment.
