Hi Guys
In the event of a "funny noise", it might be best to stop the engine sooner rather than later.
Perhaps this driver lacked a certain amount of "mechanical sympathy" (to his cost).
After the bottom of the piston fell away the errant rod and pin must have been thumping the remaining top of the piston up to TDC where it fired and actually kept running while the pin tried to gouge itself out of the cylinder. A big chunk of piston debris was also punched out of the front of the crankcase.
The only thing that stopped it was the plug being closed by a chunk of debris
Best Regards

Just a quick hone job and put it back together.

I think I would use acid in this case. Drop the whole mess into a 5 gal bucket about 2/3 full of acid and come back and check it in a week.

Hey Jim and Andy
I think your right with the crank and the cylinder. Hopefully the right hand crankcase will repair OK, though!!

Hi Gerry
Whatever piston, from questioning the driver (who was new to the sport), it had been in way too long!!
I'm pretty sure from the markings still visible on the top of the piston that it was a Prox which is actually an ART piston. ART also manufacture genuine Honda pistons.
Nothing wrong with the piston choice, but as I say nothing lasts forever!!
Best Regards

Hi Chris
Shame your not across the road, you would have got the job, especially at that price
But to be honest, there is a little more than welding up the cracks. The crank chamber walls have been pushed out a fair amount and bolt holes are ovalled and squashed. We all know what happens when you try and push those walls back into place.
However, I'm sure my man with the TIG will be able to do the bizz.
Best Regards

Ian, do you have a way of trueing the cases when your done patching them up? With all that welding and damage as you described, it's going to move those bearing pockets a might bit....

Hi Chris
Not a specific piece of kit. Worst case scenario is that it's either scrapped or we have to sleeve the main bearing housings with pressed in steel sleeves. With the crankcases being reasonably inexpensive, it dosen't take too much before replacement is the best (and easiest) option.
Of course the cases are evenly pre-heated to 275 degC (527F) prior to weding.
Best Regards
