Leopard Problem

I have a spark issue, this started this past weekend after it started raining. However I am not sure if it had something to dod with the or something electronic went.

This is what happened. Went out for the warm up laps for the prefinal ran fine got about a half lap in started sputtering really bad, as I pulled into the pits died completly.

Got back to my pits check for spark no spark. As the motor dryed out or cooles down I got spark back. Started fine ran it up to about 100 degrees water temp, ran fine on the satnd. I tape all the connnectors together.

Went out for the final same thing.

Came in as it cooled or dryed started up fine.

Does anyone have an ideal what to look at.

Again it is a spark issue not a water getting in the carb or a fouled plug.

Brian,
I've got a spare coil and you're welcome to to. Check the wiring coming out under the ignition cover for bare or broken wires. Bet you've check for loose grounds. Pull the connectors apart and check for a pushed in pin. Find another engine you can swap your electronics to. Good Luck

Yup three different plugs, checked grounds. Gonna get the harness off and check the whole thing for cracks. Almost postive something got wet and caused the problem

Brian, I was talking to my dad after you told me about this and it sounds like it might be the coil. We have had this problem on the Yamaha's. They would run fine till they got warm and then cut out.

Otherwise something got wet like you said. Good luck.

This is a break down of the coil windings of either the HT coil or the stator. As the parts get hot they loose impedance and quit developing spark.

Easiest way to check is by swapping parts.

I got out for one season this past weekend at Badger before it started to rain, no issue's. So I am guessing it was something taking in moisture.

I had greased all the connectors prior to going there, unfortunatly they do not run in the rain for club races. So no clue in the problem is fixed for wet conditions.

I believe that the stator may also be going bad and maybe the rain affected it some how. It just doesnt seem that is producing the proper amount of spark. Will be swapping it out b4 the next race.

To bad it wasnt a yamaha I only have 20 coils and TCI's

Hi Brian.

This may sound dumb but running a Leopard, are you using a push button start or a key start?

If you are using a push button, use the IAME supplied cover to put over the button box when raining. I had the same problem a couple of years ago & after everything dried out, used the cover next time it rained & no problem.

If it's a key start, give the connections a good spray of CRC before going out.

Did not issue again but it was dry,

I however in the last event had a problem with the screws backing out in the flywheel,clucth and drum over the weekend. until finally the cranck seal went, I wonder if it was going before and moisture was getting in there
