This weekend marks the third edition of the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. The Southern California city has welcomed karting with open arms to host a three-day festival along it's city's streets. This year will be the first with Superkarts! USA working with the city and operating the on-track activities.
eKartingNews.com will be there to provide 'Trackside Live' coverage of the event, including live scoring - provided by SKUSA and Race-Monitor.com - along with live audio with the play-by-play voice of Rob Howden. Coverage will begin roughly 1pm on Saturday, October 8, just before qualifying begins. EKN would like to thank P1 Engines for supporting the broadcast and ask that if anyone else is interested in partnering up to be part of the program to email rhowden@howdenmediagroup.com
Be sure to bookmark www.ekartingnews.com/live so you can listen in and watch during the weekend. Stay tuned to this thread for continuous updates beginning Friday and all the way through to the podiums on Sunday. _________________ David Cole

EKN Trackside Live: Friday, October 7, 2011
Morning race fans!
The EKN staff of one is now on-site for this year's Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. With the entry numbers expected to top 100 in just seven classes, the turnout should be considered a success for, Superkarts! USA, the new promotional team of this race. There are over 20 entries in both Pro Shifter (S1/S2) and TaG Senior, so we're in for some exciting racing for sure.
The track was moved right into the downtown core, creating a very intimate atmosphere. This is my first trip to the race, and I guess I expected something of a 'Rock Island feel', but the buildings in the area are not near as tall as in RI, so it's definitely something unique. The track will be very quick, and is quite narrow in places such as the long 1000' straightaway, just as it was last year. I am sure that SKUSA officials will be attempting to drill the need for respect into the drivers....as in respect for the course AND respect for their fellow racers. In talking with the City of Lancaster officials, this is a long term program and it will be important for the racers to realize that a successful event will mean many years of participation and growth for this Grand Prix.
Speaking of the City of Lancaster, they are behind this event 100% and I expect to see it grow not only in terms of participation, but in local stature as well. There is a vocal commitment to focus on identifying ANY area that can be improved for next year and they are working very closely with SKUSA to put on a safe, exciting race this weekend.
As for the racing itself, I am working on the event preview right now and will have it up on the site today. _________________ Rob Howden

A couple of pics from tonight, VIP races using concession type karts:
Big generator lights are on for VIP night races:
Big screen TV showing at the end of the straight for crowd to look at:
I was arguing with my tuner (Jason Hettervick) before dinner, that the straightaway was too short and we are going to have to change gears in the morning, as it wasn't 1080 feet as advertised. I felt like I could rifle a softball four times and it would go from one end of the other, and that ain't 1080 feet. I was about ready to go to home depot to buy a tape measure and prove the straight was too short. I was thinking it looked more like an 85 mph straight, if that.
After we ate dinner and the Friday night VIP races were over at 8:30 p.m., SKUSA re-configured track for the SKUSA races tomorrow, and uh...added about 250 feet to the straightaway, moving the hairpin down a another block. I guess they didn't want the concession karts going full out for a fifth of a mile. Okay.....it looks like a long 1080 feet now, possibly a 100 mph straight. Glad I put those new brake pads in and bedded them in at Willow Springs kart track earlier in the day.
Reportedly about 16 people in S4, should be a fun day tomorrow.
-Doug
Totally unfair that S1/S2 guys get first wack at $200 prize for first person to hit 100 mph down the straight. S4 shoulda been gridded first! |

EKN Trackside Live: Saturday, October 8, 2011
Things are finally underway at this year's Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. The track went hot at 8:30 am this morning for the first round of practice, and a majority of hte drivers handled the green track with poise. A couple over-eager pilots found themselves in the TechPros, but otherwise, the sessions were issue-free. The drivers are taking their time getting a feel for the unique characteristics of the track, and we're all hoping for clean racing.
Qualifying is set to go for 12:30 pm, immediately following the Open Ceremonies, which will begin at 12:00 pm. Following the presentation of the colors, the signing of the national anthem, and the official welcome from Mayor Parris and SKUSA's Tom Kutscher, we'll head into qualifying. _________________ Rob Howden
