Proto Racing products makes these works of art. We put one on our BSP and had it dynoed. Stock with a Cone Filter and a WKA approved header. 7.4 HP after jetting. Installed the Proto Pipe and "bam" 9.8. after jetting. I saw it with my own eyes. Brian at Proto Racing has been building Pro Level AMA 4 Cycle Dirt and AMA road race engines for over 30 years. He know wants to make a name into Karting after I let him drive mine. Does awesome port work. Working on getting the pipes certified for 2012 WKA and others. For pics on my Kart go to this link.
Proto Pipes are hand made, not cheap and built to order!

How many pulls did you do on the dyno?

Was the engine new?

Did you average several pulls going back and forth or just run it once with each pipe?

I don't doubt that you "saw it with your own eyes" but a 2.4 hp difference on one of these engines with two pipes built to BSP rules sounds like a pretty wild claim. Heck, I'll bet you would be hard pressed to see that much difference from the stock muffler to any open pipe.

I'm sure somebody will buy it but not me Laughing

Cheers,

That looks cool but I find it hard to believe he got 2.4hp out of the pipe and muffler, the other problem is unless it is an open pipe rule where you race not many will buy it. AKRA and WKA uses that ugly weenie pipe and muffler or the RLV B91 mini for a muffler

Hey I dont make them I just run one. Dont want one fine simply dont buy one. There was a total of 5 runs. Since you have mentioned the name....I was running the RLV pipe. The header on the Proto Pipe is much lighter and larger from the flange down and consistant. Know one as of yet has complained about running it. But it does draw attention.
( one stage). Wether or not the approve it is yet to be seen. They are much quiiter than the RLV which was WKAs concern. ( Its a packed baffle). The clones are a blast to run. I was running a Leopard but costs make the 4 cycle more fun. Its also VERY close racing but not for everyone. I raced Yamaha TZ250s for over 20 years in Both AMA Pro and WERA National and over 20 championships n the wall. Believe me.....it was hard to go four stroke. Embarassed

Hi Marc,

Didn't mean to bash you, it's just that I build motors and dyno every one to make sure it's right. If there was 2.4 hp in changing the pipe believe me, it would have been found by now.

Your buddy might make a really nice product but claims like this one will peg the B.S. meter every time because for this to be true everyone else who's read the rulebook and built a pipe had to have been pretty stupid to miss a 30% increase in power.

Go back and have him run two different motors on the dyno, alternate between his pipe, the RLV or any other AKRA legal pipe (don't just test one then the other). Do the same thing with both engines and average the results. If you still see even a 3% difference please sign me up as a dealer.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, a few years back I had a guy come to me claiming big improvements in HP and fuel economy from a simple venturi modification to carbs or FI. He already had a pretty good business making this mod and wanted to prove it on the dyno. I set up a bone stock GX390 clone and ran many, many back to back tests but there was no quantifiable difference. At the end of the day I had a stack of modified carbs I couldn't even sell because of his "non-disclosure" agreement, yes he was that serious about his "invention."

Bottom line is all this stuff we race with is designed by engineers. Power output is predictable within a certain range given set parameters (this is why rulebooks work). Going up against RLV in the spec pipe karting market is a really bad business plan, they have the rule makers in their back pocket and have for years, look at KT100.

Anyone can go on the internet and say anything they want. Sometimes they get someone else to say it for them, and sometimes everyone involved honestly believes what is being said. But, that don't make it true, that's why we race....

TZ250's are awesome bikes, I used to watch them run at Laguna Seca back in the 1980's. I'm glad you found karting and I'm glad your buddy wants to get involved, karting needs more innovators Very Happy

Cheers,

Marc
There was no bashing of the product. I think it looks really cool. John is correct about going up against RLV, they have a strong hold on the 2 and 4 cycle market for spec intake and exhaust products in karting. You are correct about the clones being a blast to run, I was all but out of karting 2 years ago and this was the only way for me to stay in it. I give nothing but credit to your friend on his design, if it gets WKA/AKRA approval I'll probably buy one just because it looks so cool

I am still hanging around karting because of the clone also. One problem I do see with the pipe is that when you use a plastic full coverage bumper, it will be toast ! (Literally) Other than that it looks cool. And all of this aside, I dont want to see people making the Box Stock Clones any faster, thats what make them so fun to race, you have to drive them !

Marc,

If your friend wants to sell them just have him get on the WKA or IKF board. Wink
