The engine temp is around 300 and idling fine. From a standing start the engine stalls with in 5 yards. It did it to me twice in a row.
What could the reason(s) be and how do I fix it. _________________ Race Grandpa

Carb, sticking needle valve.
Clean it good to start, drain the fuel after you're done for the day.
Let us know if it doesn't fix the problem.
Good luck, _________________ John Matthews

John,
Way behind on my schedule. However, I was thinking about the situation. Between the last time out when I had the problem and the prior time on the track I cleaned my air filter. This is the first time I did that. Wonder if I could have put to much oil on the air filter. (The instructions said to apply it liberally and I sure did that.)
Thanks,

I would think you had have to almost dunk your filter in filter oil to get it so wet it couldn't breath.
Clean the pilot and be done with it. |

OK I will clean the pilot jet.
However, I have been spraying a lot of oil through the inside of the filter. I now understand that it should be sprayed on the outside of the filter. (Different than what K&N said for this product produced for auto filters.)
The instructions said to apply it liberally - well I think I went overboard. Had oil dripping out of the filter. _________________ Race Grandpa

Thanks. Just starting to learn the required maintenance. It is far more than I originally thought it would be. But this is the first race engine I have had. So lots of surprises. _________________ Race Grandpa

| Your engine is very much like a Non-Race engine. Find a mentor in your area or take a basic auto shop class. |

Well I never had these problems with the engines on my lawn mowers which took almost no maintenance.
Two years ago I took the beginning course in Auto Tech at the community college. Half way through the class the instructor said that upon completing the course we would be qualified to work at Jiffy Lube. ( The week before I set the timing on my car's engine and replaced the exhaust system from the manifold back.) I never finished the class.
Yes a mentor would be great. Looking for a person that is knowledgeable with 4-cycle engines. However, at 60 years of age I am hard to train. _________________ Race Grandpa

Am thinking that you might want to check with the Kart-o-rama folks in Sumner...not *too* far from Olympia but not quite like a trip to the grocery. Pretty sure they keep up with the 4/s stuff and can be a big help.
It's actually pretty easy to do the carb. Take it off, take the bowl off, squirt brake cleaner into the jets, spray with air and reassemble. Maybe a tiny squirt of oil on the slide as you put it back in. No problem...takes about five minutes. If that doesn't fix it, take each jet out and make sure you can see light through it. You'll find the one that's clogged. |
