If you were going to the salt flats what motor would you run? Any combo, alky, gas, pipe, clutch, no limit so long as it's 100cc. Doesn't even have to be a kart motor. Another person asked me which makes me wonder what others think, here's my guess. These guys are stuffing a motor into a moped of some sort. 3 miles to get up to speed with a 1 mile trap speed section, gotta do the pass like 3 times I think.
IMO- Reedjet or similar, TS or old style "O" Slippy pipe on alky with Buller or Collins twin carbs. Horstman, SMC axle clutch or Jack shaft clutch if space is a problem. I'm guessing on a kart at Utah 7500 ft corrected alt about 110 due to poor air, in a bike about 102.
Watcha think? _________________ www.Hegar4.com |

| Chris. Lindsay Fox did this last year in a laydown with a Yamaha. Her dad, Wilshire Walkup, set it up for her. I dont think they come on this site too often but you can find them on the southern kart club site. Also Lindsay has her own site www.lindsayfox.com |

I do remember that deal, I had forgot about that one. IMO a Yamaha would not do the trick if were really getting after it but I'll bet they have a class for that motor all by itself. Seems if you can mount it on something they'll give you a record. _________________ www.Hegar4.com |

| Brian Thomas and David Bradley with Jim Stroud went there many years ago with the Dap engines and karts. I do not know the results but I was told that Bradley did not unload his kart after seeing what Brian's looked like after one pass. Everything was coated with sand. |

I know if you rent a car in Utah and it comes back with any of that white stuff on it, you own it. _________________ www.Hegar4.com |

They could add nitromethane to the fuel if they are adventurous. We used to use 5 or 10% with McCulloch's, and rebuild them often. A fixed pipe might be easier to package than a slide pipe.
The salt guys are a breed unto their own. They race one week a year and talk about it the other 51. |

I already told em to buy an extra few motors just in case... just in case there's a sale on nitro! _________________ www.Hegar4.com |

| Whos the robbie knieval wannabe thats going to ride a moped with a 100 open motor on it? anyhoo what a badass.....seems like there would be something lighter than a axle clutch if you were going for all out speed. Watercooler be faster?? direct drive? tow that thing up to about 20 until it can pull on its own, than again if you were hooked up direct drive could you imagine whacking that thing at about 105?? be a brown streak for a quarter mile I guarantee it. seems like slippy pipe would give the best all out top end. Ive always wanted to go to speedweek down there, Ive heard its pretty epic. |

Robbie Knieval here... I'm really not a badass... just crazy.
No direct drive. Simply too dangerous if it locked up.
Gear wise, it wouldn't be too far off from a laydown kart. 100mph at 15000. I'm thinking a watercooled reedjet is the most promising platform so far. It will fit without too much trouble and would appear to have the power to get the job done... but all bets are off at the salt, we'll just have to hammer it and see.
The parameters are:
100cc or less
single speed, clutch slip is ok just no shifting.
Gas.
Must still retain the pedals... its a moped for crying out loud...
Moped frame, but it can be altered.
Moped wheels... Here's the I'm crazy part... they're 17x1.4" Which takes a 2.25-2.5" tire... Top fuel front tires...
I can and will run a full fairing.
I can and might employ a pusher to get it going... Might... Rather not... Just a guess but I'd assume trucks hurt when they roll over the top of you but that's just a guess.
I could go 125cc or to alky but that put's me into a classes that I'm not even crazy enough to mess with. |

Levi I love it, sounds like a wild time. You say you can alter the frame, can you stretch the wheelbase? seems like getting down out of the air would be just as important as big HP. if it is gas rules only, run some really really good race gas if ya know what i mean. makes a diff especially at altitude. Im sure youll keep gearing taller and taller untill it wont pull it anymore. sounds like fun. keep us updated.

Is Alky not an option because you won't or is it part of the rules? I had thought you said it was an option. _________________ www.Hegar4.com |

Well... It puts me into a different class... A class where I'd be considered sane and level headed...
And to be perfectly honest... I'm scared to death of the stuff. Like I was telling you, we burnt down a brand new blow alky hydro. (Drag boat racing) I didn't even know it was on fire untill after we had it on the trailer. It was it's first license run.
Invisable fire while clinging to a missile with nobody for 5 miles inbetween hot pits... The idea of rolling around on the salt trying to put it out chills my blood a bit.
Not to say that it isn't perfectly safe or that half the crazyies there aren't going to run it but I'm really just still hung up about that boat. I guess you'd just have to have been there. |

AERO!!!! Gotta have it with minimal power, cool video.
Take a 5 gallon pail of Alky and the twin carbs so you have an option. In all my years I've never had an issue with alky catching fire, I doubt many in karting have. _________________ www.Hegar4.com |
