|
|
We are going to get into box stock next year so my son can race another class + his 2-cycle. However I'm somewhat confused by the many websites advertising 'Box Stock / Clone' engines at various levels. It was my understanding this was supposed to be an entry level, no frills or mods class we can run on the cheap (potentially).
Now I see:
Box Stock / Clone
Box Stock / Clone (with basic mods...governor removed, etc)
Box Stock / Clone (blue printed and basic mods)
Box Stock / Clone outlaw
Box Stock / Clone (blue printed with high performance mods)
Advertised prices from $129 to $900+....less than an Animal or any 2-cycle but more or equal to the LO206 which is a race prepped and ready package with a sealed block.
All or some claiming to be within the rules. I see different clutches, headers, mufflers, gapped rings, drilled jets, etc. available.
Now I'm a racer and going faster is always great. I wish the LO206 had a following in Florida but that does not seem to be the case unless anyone knows otherwise.
Does it seem like the BS / Clone is heading down the same path of becoming unaffordable for anyone who wants to get into karting?
Just looking for some thoughts before we go and drop money on the wrong package. |

| If your track sticks to the "Box Stock / Clone (with basic mods...governor removed, etc)" choice, then yes, it is very affordable fun. We are getting 20+ entries at our sprint track every month in that class. Many of those have more than one season of racing and practice on the motors, and have never had to do any repairs. Just change the oil and keep an eye on the valve lash. |

| Any thoughts on the lack of momentum for the LO206 other than the obvious time to market issue? Seems like it would be a great alternative to the clone (wars).....apologies to George Lucas. |

The Lo206 , while presenting a price that may seem high compared to a clone , is a fantastic deal. It is a high quality , dependable , "racing" engine. I'm very familiar with clones and the entire line of Briggs racing engines. The clones are not in the same league. While they look appealing with their sub $100 price tag you will be ,at a minimum, close to or over $400 with a billet flywheel before you are on the track. It's still less expensive than a 206 but what you have is a bunch of nice parts on a so - so base platform. And with less power and dependability.
The 206 is a better deal , selling it to a market that is bound and determined to race karts at a bargain basement price , though ill conceived , is the nemesis of the 206. It's not the product , it's the sales pitch.
Sort of similar to how Obama was elected ! _________________ I breathe ,therefore,I race |

Todd,
What does WKA call this class? International OHV or Box Stock Project?
What tech rules were followed in FKCS?
Is this class under Man Cup or Gold Cup?
Just curious. |

Todd,
To answer your question, it appears that wka ikf and akra are agreeing to a common set of rules for 2011. Wka will have a national points class under Gold Cup.I believe that the clone engine will be called Box Stock. This will clear up a lot of questions that people have. The 4 cycle forum has a list of the current akra 2011 rules under OHV.

Todd,
The clone class has really saved us as a club (NFKC/103rd St). We adopted our owned local series rules as WKA had not made any decisions at this time last year. Well, they have now, the Jr Sportsman clone, 290lbs!
It will race under the Gold Cup but very few locals will participate at that weight. A few kids will have close to 90 lbs of lead on the kart when they only weigh 65 themselves.
I can tell you this, we ran a 39.5 in the clone last weekend at 103rd at a race and there has not been a cadet run that fast there, ever. We have enjoyed the class but with any racing, folks are going to push the limits to win, and we passed tech.
If WKA would look at what Barnesville (8-10 participants) and NFKC (6-9) participants are doing, the class will work. At 290lbs, it will not. |

Seems to me that the real problem will start with the first WKA or IKF sanctioned event. At the end of the day, the winner of this "Box Stock" class will have to go through some sort of engine tech to prove the legality of the engine. As soon as that happens, that sets the standards on what can be altered and what can't. As soon as a micrometer or dial indicator is placed on the engine, the engines are immediately open to machining and improvements. Then, a good sharp engine builder will do his homework and machine and tweak an engine, still within the rules, but it will have 2 or 3 more HP that the engine that is truly "Out of the box". We all know what come next ... More $$$$$$$

Don't race IKF or WKA. Seems like things get expensive when they go regional and so be it, they gotta win. Run the clone at your local club and keep it absolutely out of the box stock. If you want to spend money to trick it up, your DQ'ed, or buy a Winnebago and go race with the fast crowd. _________________ swampwater smyth concurs "If you aint first, yer last."

Dean, I am a member of So Cal Sprinters and race the 4th Saturday of the month at Adams kart track in Riverside CA. I have a L206 but nobody else does so I start at the back of the grid of the WF and Techcumsah guys. No points, no trophy, no class championship and this is fine with me. I know that sometimes my posts are offensive to some but I started driving in 1957 and am now old, fat and slow and only race to have fun and could care less about a trophy so from my point of view I don't care at all about whats goin on in the political world of kart racing. I know WKA and IKF provide insurance for the club races and when I said don't race WKA or IKF I meant don't run in their regional events. If you want to hold the costs down on the clones or Briggs motors just race your club races only. I know you young hot shoes wanna go fast, and so did I a few years back, and thats a good thing, go get em!! My ideas are coming from someone who is on the backside of their racing career and stuck in the 1960's. _________________ swampwater smyth concurs "If you aint first, yer last."

At AKA Speedway ( dirt oval - Phoenix )the clone class started with a bang. Just club racing. Didn't take long for the costs to escalate. That's racing. Many racers did not like this. Since the cost of a LO206 is LESS than a current clone ( yes ,we do have a claim rule, $125.00 !!!!) the LO206 class is about to get off the ground here in a big way.

Why?? Why did the cost escalate. Who let it and why?? Clone is out of the box stock. No changes, nothing, nada, can't even peel the price sticker off. What is it that can't be understood about out of box stock, no changes, nothing, nada, can't even. What?? People WANT to spend $1000 dollars on their Harbor Freight fire breathers ?? Well have at it B U T you can no longer race in the box stock class and MUST move into OPEN CLONE _________________ swampwater smyth concurs "If you aint first, yer last."
