Kudos to Scott Speed. Last year he was getting bashed on here (rightfully so) by how bad he was doing. What a difference a year makes. Currently 12th in points. Great job.

Dan, you are sooooo right--what a difference a year makes--and I honestly believe he will be having a win before the end of the season with alot of podium finishes in 2011--while we all want the drivers to experience instant success, it takes time--and if the car owners can wait for it to happen, we fans can too. And I know there are some very happy family members in California tonight!

Linda: What the Heck is a podium finish in NASCAR?

Even though NASCAR doesn't have a podium finish, I'm pretty sure she meant first place through third. Excellent job by Scott. He is on a roll and I hope he has continued success. If the owner of Red Bull didn't see that Scott was a winning driver, he would have been gone a long time ago.

I'm happy he has been doing well! Keeping his ass out of trouble and getting good finishes. Definitely my favorite of the newer drivers in Nascar. You never know what he is going to do or say during an interview either and I like that.

And here I was wondering when this subject was going to be brought up Laughing

Give it time, guaranteed he'll be struggling to stay in the top 35 in owner points again by the time the Chase comes along, Scott who?

When a NASCAR driver is finishing at or near the top I think that the driver accounts for about 1/3 of the success. The rest is accounted for by the superior car and crew chief.

So Jimmy Johnson really isn't that good of a driver? Maybe he just has a better car and crew over and over again.

Ric, come on, give Scott a little credit.

My "wisdom" has its limit, suited for the Lounge.

I believe Johnson is a very good driver. I have nothing against him and I do not care if he wins another NASCAR championship.

Is he better on a consistent basis than all of the other NASCAR drivers. Trying to determine that is highly problematic.

This is somewhat of a team sport.

However, your perception is your reality.

Scott will definitely drop in points, but he'll remain safely in the top 35. It's early and a few good finishes have kept him well up there but one bad finish at this point can drop you about 10 spots. I think he'll finish top 25 at the end of the year, maybe top 20, but that's about it. Still a marked improvement from last year and not bad for only his second year in the series.

I agree that the driver is a small part of the equation, 1/3, not sure exactly what the % would be but I'd say that's close. Look at Jr. Driving the best equipment in NASCAR and struggles for top 20's. Not all his fault. He has had several equipment issues that were no fault of his own. Crew chief relations also plays a huge role.

I think what makes Jimmy and Chad so successful is that even when they are struggling they make the most of it. They don't get down on each other and work together to figure it out. That and having the best luck of anyone I've ever seen doesn't hurt either.

I have to disagree otherwise all these (successful?) open wheel drivers would do much better than they have. During the same era drivers like Kyle Bush, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Vickers, Logano, Keselowski etc have come in through the "feeder" series where people like Montoya, Hornish, Danica, Papis, Franchitti, Tracy, etc have come in with a winning portfolio in open wheel and between them all have a couple of (lucky) wins to show for it. Bush, Edwards and Hamlin must have close to 30 wins just between them selves.

Mike

ps- Scott is where he is in points due to circumstances (wrecks) in the first 4 races. The Toyota teams in general (this includes Red Bull) haven't improved much if any in 2010 where as teams like Penske, RCR, Rousch, RPM and EGR have stepped up their game to pressure Hendrick so, IMO, he'll be back where he was last year.

But I think you are comparing apples and oranges. Sure Montoya, Hornish, etc. are great drivers but they come from a different league. I don't care how great of a driver you are, if you go from a 2000lb. car with as much downforce as you'll ever need, electronics to control everything you do, and tires the size of 55 gallon drums, and jump into a 3400lb. car with very little downforce, no traction control or any other driver assisting electronics, and puny tires, it'll take awhile to get used to it. It took Montoya 3 years and now he can run with the best of them.

My statement should be prefaced by saying that among the guys that have several years experience in heavy full-bodied cars that the driver is about 1/3 of the equation.
