I'm getting ready to mount a brand new WF engine to a brand new 2009 Arrow AX9-4S. I've never driven a proper racing kart. 48 years old 5'-11" & 175 lbs. I spent the winter reading everything available on this site and everywhere else. Learned an awful lot but there are a few things I'd like to get the experts to weigh-in on one more time before I buy a some key parts.
I'll be sprint racing under WKA rules in the Granite State series http://www.granitestatekartchampionship.com (Sugar Hill and New Hampshire Motor Speedway) and maybe OVRP http://ovrp.com/
This will be a new engine class in New England so there aren't any local experts (except Peter @ OVRP). George Vorrilas at Apex Kart Sports http://www.apexkartsports.com is putting together a WF/Intrepid Storm to help promote the class. My questions:
1) Which engine mount is the best for my application? Apparently 0, 5, 8, 15 degree would all work? Do I need lateral adjustment?
2) Is the "chain guard plus" from Faster Motors http://www.fastermotors.net/Chainguard.html necessary?
3) Do I need to install the Breather Bypass Kit B&S 555688
4) What engine spares are absolutely necessary to get started.
5) My first practice day will likely be at Sugar Hill but (hopefully) I'll be running on four different tracks (NHMS Hill Course and temporary parking lot course and OVRP). Where in the world do I start with for buying sprocket sets at about $20 each?
6) The GSKC organizers are deciding whether to require the WKA silencer or invoke a Local Rule and use the CIK/Canadian silencer. Any opinions on noise versus power loss?
I hope other people in New England will see WF as a good fit. I don't just want to race against George _________________ Frank

Frank
Glad to see you join the ranks of WF you will have some fun.
I have ran the Arrow kart for a number of years and it is a very good kart. We are the same in size and weight and age. So I give some of my opinions the set up and such.

I used a 15 degree when I used to run flat heads and had extra mounts so I used them. Its a personal choice. Any degree mount will work. A must however is that you can adjust the side to side as the Arrow is a bit tight to the seat strut and the engine will need to be offset to work properly.
That is up to you. I have not used one but when I ran some older softer chassises. I probably should have.

IMO No. I have not used them. If you find you are getting a large amount of oil coming out out of valve cover then you may consider it.

4) What engine spares are absolutely necessary to get started. |
Spark plugs, Jet Kit, Several of the clips that hold the fuel needle in the slide of the carb(Must have a few) couple of the screws that hold the float bowl on the carb. A couple of the flywheel shield bolts. A side cover bolt or two. Oil filler cap. ( check all of them so that they are tight)
Head gasket or two or a complete gasket kit cheaper than just head gaskets. Some lapping compound. A spare clutch key and clutch bolt and washer. Rocker arm ball and stud.
A Mikes Kartstand Valvejust wrench. (Shameless cheap plug)
A flywheel cover if you take the electric starter off.

While I don't know the lengths of the tracks I would recomend a gear set that get you ratios from 3.7-4.2 to 1 that can be acheived
219 chain gears 67-71 and you would need get an 18 tooth driver as the new engine comes with a 16 and 17 tooth driver gears.
35 chain 57-62 gears and 14, 15,16 tooth drivers

In our area we have been allowing either silencer for a season. If you are using the American Silencer you must use the inner tube.
IF you are using the CIK/Canadian one the inner tube is not required. The biggest difference that we have found so far is that the jetting will be a bit different. Otherwise they are very close to each other and haven't seen a real advantage of one over the other.
The quieter silencer will make it better for everyone in the future.

It may take a bit of work to grow the class. It will be rewarding in the long run and it is fun class to run in and when you several racers all real close to each other it makes for some exciting racing from a drivers and a spectator's view.
Go Drive and have some fun.

| As far as I know, none of the WFs running in our club are using that chain guard. The WF is usually pretty reliable, so I wouldn't say there are any engine spares you "need", especially if you've got a brand new motor. You might want to get an extra carb boot - they can tear and they're relatively inexpensive. Other potential problem areas are the exhaust headers, but probably not a problem you'll see in a new motor. |

Wow, thanks for the quick and thorough reply Michael and Craig. I like that people running WF are so enthusiastic.
Still though no one wants to commit to the motor mount. I'm buying new, whatever would be ideal. There must be some pros and cons to different tilts? Briggs recommend 0 degree motor mount for setting the carb float but that seems to be easily dealt with. How?
All the other answers have provided complete clarity. The gear ratio range is a big help, especially knowing to get the 18 tooth drive.
So... which motor mount is best for my application? Thanks. _________________ Frank

It is my opinion but I like the 15 degree mount makes putting the seat struts in a bit easier.
These are some of the ones that I have used.
I used the SDH mount they are not produced anymore.
The HMS mount works Good
The Precision mount works Good
I now use the Burris Mount which is one of the best. BMC544 which will work on the Arrow chassis.
You will need to raise the float level to adjust to the 15 degree mount. _________________ OK everyone It's my opinion only, no one elses, and does not reflect any organization or office that I belong to or hold. Thank you for your support.

That's it, Michael, clarity. Even the part number. Thanks, I'll get it ordered. _________________ Frank

Frank,
Maybe we can make some crazy east / northeast traveling WF series up next year! Unofficial Barnstorming type thing.
Here's some spares I keep in the trailer.......
carb mounting boot (attaches carb to intake)
extra rope pull starter, ( get one cheap from any animal builder ) I don't use the o/b electric starter
extra fuel pump and coil. Plus all the above stuff Mike recommends !!
Cheers,

I like the barnstorming idea, Todd.
I just need some more pilots to represent New England. Anybody in MA, CT, NH, RI, ME, NY want to know more about World Formula please PM me. I've done all the research grunt work and I'm just waiting for the first track day to try out the package.
Maybe the Batavia crew will want to make a trip East? _________________ Frank
