WOW. I think thats what Ganassi ordered. Something that makes people say WOW. Interesting to a techie like me excepting one little flaw, on high speed ovals a little oversteer would mean a certain and near instant meeting would occur between the car and the wall. Of course some of these designers have invented ways of overruling physics in the past.

Indycar is going through a renewal period and its somewhat working. Better then NASCAR anyway. Originally 2011, now 2012, and possibly beyond they are looking for an evolution, and I suspect it won't be a revolution.

2 liter turbos are almost a certainty. I've heard some talk about factory stock blocks from a BB of racers at Linkedin for a while now. Limited by fuel flow rate with a spec engine controller from MoTec. Expect somewhere in the 450 HP range (although 300HP has been dumped on the table) as far as allowable fuel flow given current efficiencies. The intent is clearly to draw the manufacturers back in the game so they need a chassis configuration that will still produce the lap times on lower HP.

Cars will probably have their wings clipped in favor of nearly total ground effects downforce.

Made in the USA is also a major point.

Its a joke !
Quote:
the Delta Wing shape is simply the outcome of addressing performance targets..........
“The breakthrough was bringing the front wheels close to the center line of the chassis. This avoided the sports car look when shrouding the wheels for drag reduction.....

Since when were "looks" .... a performance target ??
and why didnt he have the same concerns over the "sports car look" of the rear ?

Quote:
“Wings are fragile, expensive, draggy and very turbulence sensitive.

..hmmm ? there would be a few designers interested in that comment !
he seems to ignore their effectiveness in generating downforce.

Quote:
We’ve also got better stability under braking because we can keep more of the braking on the rear wheels behind the center of gravity.

well.. thats certainly radical !! Surprised
Less rubber and most of the braking on the rear wheels Shocked

This all sounds like a schoolboy project !

It would have made a good article on April 1st Rolling Eyes

As an engineer, I love to see radical engineering concepts and new ideas, but I just can't see these batmobile-looking cars filling the grid of the Indy 500.

If IRL allows multiple constructors in 2012 (which I really hope they do), I would love to see the DeltaWing concept race against the more traditional designs from Dallara, Swift, or Lola. That would be entertaining.

Wonderful, when I woke up this am and saw the Indpls News and saw that "felta wing ding" I thought maybe I had died and gone to hell and this was my punishment. Then I realized that I was still alive (at least I had a pulse) and this was a form of reality that I wasn't enjoying. That thing looks like they took a Nascrap Car and gave it an abortion. What are they thinking? If this goes through I am done with Indy car viewing.

Apparently, you can take the guy out of the lounge, but you can't take the lounge out of the guy.

Did you watch the simulation on Mid Ohio??

Without putting to fine of an edge on it, They looked goofy!! Rolling Eyes

Not interested, but then again I'm kind of a traditionalist, I think a USAC Silver Crown car screams RACECAR louder than anything I compare it to.

Aw Krap!! That statement made me sound old> Embarassed

I would like see them do to Indy/Champ cars what the Grand-Am did to sports cars. Yes they are not as pretty to look at as ALMS cars but they are cheaper to run and the drivers seem to really enjoy driving them. They have a mix of engine types they play with and their performance looks comparable to each other.

Instead of super swoopy, delicate and expensive machines, how about a little clunky but robust car that you can race hard and fix when you break it? It wouldn't matter much to the big teams but the little teams would love it.

For those wondering how that thing can turn with that narrow front and wide rear, my guess is the designers are putting their faith in electronics and will be using the differential to turn it.

So, in sense it is like a modern jet fighter that is inherently unstable and cannot fly without electronic intervention.

I think the IRL is more than willing to dump its hard-core fans, all 50 of them, and roll the dice on something radical that will leave the more casual fan going "o-o-o-o-o-o-h, look at that." In fact, they might not have any choice.

From an article on SPEED, the version shown has already gone through 50 revisions. Sounds like this was maybe a mid-way point, or 'getting there', but not their final design. Not sure that they explained all that until well after the fact.
Last night on Wind Tunnel, Robin Miller said his mail is running about 50/50 for and against.

The guys at Delta Wing must be writing a lot of letters.

I figured out recently that I know the designer - I knew his first name, but not his last. His son races karts @ NCMP. One of those people you know by first name only - even though you see them all the time. He's a nice guy, but I'm still not big on his design. The back half is cool - just not the inset front wheels. Someone P-shopped the Swift front end on the Delta Wing and it looked pretty good.

Ughh, you gotta be kidding me. Rolling Eyes What was wrong with the Panoz DP01?

You know what it looks like: the last nail in the coffin of AOW racing.

As Chip said Half the cost of a IRL car, less HP and as fast..

Lola proposal out today. Boring! Same ole, same ole, with a marketing strategy that the chassis can be used for both IRL and Indy Lights. OWR needs radical changes, my friends. Delta Wing FTW.

Or better yet, approve them all...then they can duke it out on track and the winner will prevail. Competing ideas is what made Indy great when I was growing up (60s/70s) and what it needs now, IMHO.
