the oldschool cars i agree are beatuful peices of work ! but i guess im the only one who actually like how the modern F1 cars looked too ! before the major changes of 2009 Laughing !! the 97'-08 era looked excellent to me !

To me, the new ones look like some sort of saber-tooth anteater from one of the Ice Age movies. Heavens sake, junk all the aero. Save a fortune for the teams, and as been stated before, go to steel brakes. Those passing zones would get rrreaallll big.

The premise of all racing is winning. I agree the cars of yester-year are more pleasing to the eye, but todays cars are the result of incredibly high levels of engineering and in particular, computer engineering working to get the most out of each design and still stay within the rules. CFD (computational fluid dynamics) is what is driving the shape and look of todays cars. Typical in engineering is function first, style second. If the rules are somewhat stable over the several years, the cars will become more pleasing to the eye. F1 is all about glamore and glitz, but engineering and technology is what drives what you see on the track.

Who wants a great looking, sexy car that finishes last Rolling Eyes

No.... actually the whole thing is driven by commercial interests,..
what you see on the track is merely a mobile advertising hoarding.
One of the reasons the teams have manipulated the rules to retain the wings is because it gives them a much larger billboard surface

Nobody, but if they arranged the regs to stop favouring the "ugly flying pigs" , then maybe the style and beauty would come to the front !.

Please note, I didn't say that all the cars for the last 20 years were ugly, I said they were "far from beautiful" - some more than others.

But the real down-hill slide came with the raised noses. It wasn't to bad at first, just raising the the noise a couple inches and drooping the wing a bit. But then they when went with the full blown high high nose, with the wing suspended under. Aerodynamically it works, but it just looks horrible. Then the oversized noise wings of the last year - just butt ugly.

The clean, no winged cars of the late 1960's were the best. The late 1970's were pretty nice - the JPS Lotus that Mario won the title may have been the best looking winged car of all time.

It's been down hill ever since.

BTW, where was that picture of the Ferrari taken - is that Donnington? I've been there, but it was 20 years ago Rolling Eyes

To be honest it’s a bit like comparing a beautiful WWII vintage aircraft to a modern jet fighter. I bet people were bitchin' in the 60's about how ugly the moderen F1 cars are! As much as I love the look of the 60’s & 70’s F1 machines, technology marches on and there really is no turning back. In my opinion F1 should be on the cutting edge of technology, every other form of open wheel racing is already a spec series, I say untie the engineer’s hands & let’s see what they come up with, (and hope like h3ll the cars stay on the track!). I agree with Tim that the raised noses are a very ugly innovation, however there are many in F1 who feel its appropriate to have there noses held higher.. Laughing
The picture Gregg posted, (I believe it’s a ’92 Jordan during a test session), is one of the best F1 pics of all time!

Ah yes, the Benetton B192. I remember thinking to myself, when looking at a photo in Autoweek of the car, "I hope that car isn't fast, it looks horrible".

Unfortunately, it was.

And yet, I'd take the B192 anyday over any of the more recent F1 cars of the past few years. (At least now they have the "Coke bottle" shape again.)

It will never be the same, in formula racing, as the rules and technology continue to hone the sport into a finer and finer point, all cars will eventually be the same. It's a shame that open eye interpretation of rules can't be like in the 50's, 60's and 70's, even the 80's. Front engine to rear, wings, 6 wheels, ground effects, turbos, active suspension, carbon fiber chassis, carbon brakes, the wild variations and styles that dominated the sport in the late 60's into the 80's are gone. Everyone has to design their cars closely to that the lead dog has or they may be gone. You can't take back the computers, wind tunnels and other tools that have gotten them to this point. Bruce McLaren died testing his cars, something they literally can do to the same point or beyond without ever producing a part.
Like last year proved, the formula needs to have great changes each year (this year is huge fuel tanks/no refueling and the effects it will have on design, race strategy)
If they just stay with the same rules year after year, it will be in the malaise NASCAR and others are in where only the mega teams and sponsors are important.
When the USSR unveiled their space shuttle, it looked like a near perfect copy (sans size) of the NASA shuttle because the design for the job at hand was identical. Look at some of the MiG and other Russian fighter designs (including Russia's latest ripoff stealth fighter that is a F22 copy), same job, same design.
If F1 wants to be a leader, they need radical change and allow wide interpretations each year to keep designers on their toes an dthe sport interesting.
