What is the recommended CHT for a W.F. motor, on gas, and what is the max one would want to see? _________________ Bruce Jackson |

Bruce - You should shoot for 350 to 370. Over 410 you should be concerned.

Concerned might be a strong word Tim. On Road Race I have run as high as 470-480, and run fast. The Engine works harder on the big tracks though. I wouldn't be worried about grenading one until I was above 500.
On sprint, much above 400 and I think you likely have a car that's binding up some and making the engine work too hard. Then there are a few odd ball engines that run hot and fast or cold and fast. But in general, 380-400. |

I always find that my WF run the best between 350 -375 with the engine, carb, timing combo that i run. I have had them run up into the low 400's on a very hot day on a very sticky track and 9 times out of 10 its because your chassis is way to tight and working the engine. Chris I was curious if you knew how many WF's will be running that Roadrace in April at the Grass Valley roadcourse. I didn't know what size of a turnout the WF get in roadracing.

I'm with Tim. Maybe the road race conditions provide enough cooling in other parts of the engine to allow the spark plug area to run that hot. But like Tim says, if you are anywhere near 400 on a sprint track, the problem is not in your engine, it's in your chassis. And I've had several engine seisures at 410-415 on sprint tracks. If your chassis is working, you're running no hotter than 360-370.
Hey Chris and Tim, let me know about that road race. If its the right weekend, maybe I could haul the two kids up there and make you guys work for it a little bit.

Mike - I havn't heard about how many WF's run the roadrace in Region 6. If there is a pretty good size field I would be interested in it. That would be quite the pull for you guys to come up and play. Are you guys planning on running the 4-cycle Nats this year?

PIR in Portland normally has a strong turnout, around 8-10, sometimes more. I am not sure what the Grass Valley turnout will look like right now, but if word gets out there will be more than just the Road Race regulars, it could get big in a hurry.
We had 16 in each of 3 class at Infinion in November. Talk about serious draft packing.
PS: Seizure at 420 on any track and I would question a culprit besides heat. |
