I am in the process of moving my son from Baby Karts to Cadet Junior 1 (Comer 80) and would like to know what other Junior 1 racers use for data acquision. Is it worth the money for a Mychron II (tach/temp/lap times), a simple Mychron (tach/temp)or nothing at all.

Could also use some advice on the "old" style versus "new" style Comer 80 motor. Since seat is time is the most important for him, could I buy an "old" style for now and upgrade when he gets competitive at a future date.

I'd highly recommend the Mychron2 for you and him. It's a great tool to have even if you can't download it to a computer at the track. Money well spent.
As for the motors, may be cheaper in the long run for a new style with separate cylinder and head, for any repairs or replacement parts if needed and working on it yourself. Good luck

A My-Chron II is a necessity! I am a driver and love the My-Chron units. Instead of being able to test different lines around the track and then come in and have my dad say, "Your fastest lap was lap 5." I don't remember what the heck I did on lap 5! with the My-chron I just look at it every lap. It also teaches that when you make a error that you think is no big deal, then see your time, you realize how much consistency means. My dad loves it to. With other units that show Max RPM for the session, the max might be over a bump when you got a little wheelspin. The My-Chron is undoutebly worth every penny!!!

A data logging system is a must, if you plan to tune for your driver.

As a tuner, and driver, I realize that there's a lot to do out there, and when you're racing, you won't look down and see what RPM the clutch is engaging, Max RPM at the end of the straight, Temp, etc. It's very nice to be able to look back at the data to determine gear selection, temperature, lean, rich, and all those other things that you'll get a shrug from your driver when you ask, not to mention the "..about...".

We purchased the PI Research system I, and, when we remember all the pieces, it's a great help.

Good luck in Cadet, the Comer 80 is a good little motor, you'll have a good time there.

Scott:
Two things.
Yes buy a Mychron II. Money well spent and Mike McKnight provides great service.

Second, buy a MultiChron from Mychron. This will enable you to do split times and lap times for your son and other competitors.
I have found that split times are essential. It allows you to determine where you have improved, corners or straights.

Scott:

I missed something. No body mentioned the old or new style Comer motors.

I've worked on both, and for ease of getting them right, the new style is easier to work on, however there are some drwabacks.

1. I'ts very easy to strip the long head studs out of the case. Follow the manufacturers recommendation of 80 in/lb MAX. YOu'll have fewer head leaks.
2. The heads are very thin and will distort if too much material is removed. Typically it is not necessary to remove more than 0.005" to achieve the 8.5cc Min.

For the old style, they'll be obsolete soon so unless you get a real deal, steer clear. The older style can be updated with a kit and I've found they run as good as a new engine. Kit goes for 279.00 retail so factor this in your decision.

If I can be of further assistance, feel free to write, or e-mail us.
