With the final shopping hours closing and Christmas morning just around the corner, it’s now the time of year to start thinking about heading south for the annual running of the World Karting Association KartWeek at the Daytona International Speedway in sunny Florida. The Manufacturer’s Cup Series and Dunlop Road Racing Series are set to compete on December 28-30, 2008, kicking off their 2009 racing seasons.

eKartingNews.com - while not trackside this time around - will be working closely with the WKA to provide results, daily reports, photos, and blogs from a few selected drivers, beginning during the move-in day on December 27. Keep checking this Official Discussion Thread for updates, the EKN Event Preview on Friday, and the initial posts to the driver blogs from Daytona throughout the Christmas/New Years Holiday week.

it should be interesting to see how the kart count is this year compared to last. daytona has always been one of my favorite events, sounds like there will be alot of new competition in the senior classes. should be fun Very Happy . hopefully this year there will be a new system for qualifying the large classes, last year in tag didn't work out too well.

Supposably, there was 18 pre-entries for TAG Masters with nearly all of them also registered for TAG Senior as well. I'm not sure what kind of "add-on factor" you can use to ballpark actual entries the day of the race. If you simply double pre-entries, 36 TAG Masters is a pretty good turnout for the first year (IMO). Hopefully this year the WKA is prepared for a LARGE turnout in the TAG classes, and all the classes get to run LCQ's, pre-finals, and a final. Last year, if you made the "TAG Final 1" field on qualifying time, you actually only got like 25 laps of racing. What does that translate into $ per lap- $100, $200, $300?

thanks for reminding me jeff. way to ruin my x-mas spirit! Rolling Eyes

anyway, maybe next year. the way we ran the second half of the year we would be just wasting our money anyway. we're still not 100% sure on whether to move up to TAG or stay in the yamaha. i'm thinking with all the discussion about the '09 leopard that we might be better off waiting until 2010 to see what WKA will do with the new motor. the PRD is also a possibility but i'd like to see more results on it first. we found a couple of issues that i think will help us next year so that gives us some hope but the jr. cans at BR are like running nationals every week. i think next year a 10th place finish will look pretty good.

As of the other day, WKA said they were only down 30 pre-entries from last year. In my mind, that is great. This should be another good turnout.

Thank goodness, gasoline is alot cheaper--will make life easier for the old wallet and help national events as well as local club racing. I want to wish Margay's owner, Mr. Keith, a terrific enduro race. (Does enduro have master's classes?) As a sidelight, my compliments to WKA--with all the national series and events the past few years, Daytona still remains among the destination spots for karters--my own memories include sharing Christmas with Tom Argy (now gone) in Daytona with Tom preparing an awesome meal and sharing it with everyone. Then off to Jacksonville for one of the greatest straight-aways in racing. Merry Christmas everyone.

Good thing they added TAG masters and kid kart. Kid kart may be one of the biggest classes.
