What is the right answer on this. It takes 532cc's of oil to get some to bubble out of that side bolt on the case. Yet on the side of the motor it says 650cc's. I would guess that the position angle of the CR125 in a dirt bike is difrent that it is in the kart. I have been using 650cc's. Is this right? Every other person that I ask about this seems to contradict the other.
Thanks,
Matt |

Hey Matt,
I had the same Q..... I've been told by a couple very credible people that 550cc is where you want to be, because not ALL the oil is completly drained from the case.
I've also been told (not to confuse) to open the 'fill plug' fill it to the rim, put the cap back in, wipe the oil from the case and call it a day....
Is that 'over filling' the case though?

How to tell if the kart in front of you has just refilled the GB oil with 650 mL volume, and they don't have a catch bottle;
Your visor is oily.
We fill to spec and measure the level by dipping in a plastic stick. When the oil is dirty, we change it. Usually we lose about 50 mL on the first weekend and very little after that. Usually we change it every weekend.
Just don't engage 2 gears at once or the box will explode. Shucks, you already know that!

Guess I'm just a super cheap 'ol penny pincher!I have used 500cc for years , long before we were running shifter karts. Used 500cc in the cr125s we trail ride wiht, where you abuse the *h* out of the clutch and tranny. Even got one old one that runs a total loss tranny oil system....pour it in in the morning and after all day riding the two-tracks, it's gone!! Been that way fro years...probably should fix it sometime!
WHy 500cc? Well you get to changes out of a botle that way! |

Coming straight from Swedetech himself, Reine tells us if you drain the oil and fill it, us 600cc. If you pull the cover and clean out all the oil put in 650cc. You never need to pull the plug on the side cover.

According to the 2000 Honda CR125R service manual:
Transmission oil capacity
at draining: 0.57 liter (570 ml)
at disassembly: 0.65 liter (650 ml)
hope this helps. |

Todd,
Follow the Honda manual specs and you'll be fine.
For those of you who use the filling to the sight hole method, I can predict there is a good chance you will eventually be sending your motor to us engine builders. In the last 3 months, I've had to repair 2 transmissions for lack of oil due to people using the sighthole method.
The reason is simple. There are two separate chambers in the lowerend, the clutch side and the gearbox side. When one fills the lowerend with oil, he is initially filling the clutchside only. Due to the lack of a large fluid level equalizing hole between the two chambers, it takes a substantial amount of time for the tranny fluid to transfer from the clutch side into the gearbox side. The problem is agravated further when a high viscosity oil is used.
Considering the above, it now becomes obvious that if one fills until he sees oil flowing out of the sight hole, there's an excellant chance there will be an insufficient amount of oil to lubricate the transmission.
