I'm going to paste the response from the person that I bought my kart from regarding the history of this CR125. What I would like to do, not just for the performance but for my 'own' piece of mind is do a rebuild of this motor in a couple of months. What needs to be replaced in a "Freshining Up" rebuild? Thinking both the top and bottom end. Should I find a credible shop to do the work, or try and contact the original person/company that did the work on the engine? If they're even still around.
Oh heres the snip, if you don't mind taking a sec to read the history on the engine:
I purchased the engine brand new in 1996, and ran approx 6 races (rest of the season) in stock form. In Jan 97 I sent it off to Power Source Racing (in CA) where it was ported and blueprinted top and bottom (but the kick starter boss was not cut off). I ran it all of 97 (about 16 races). I ran another engine I picked up most of '98, so this engine maybe had 4 races on it in '98. I didn't run in in '99 at all. In Jan '00 I had Mike McCalister at Motion Sports Racing (CDA, Idaho) do a complete tear-down replacing the crank, bearings, cut the kick-starter boss, etc. and do a "touch up porting" to fix what PSR didn't do right the first time (in his words). I ran it for 6 races that year.
You bought it in April of '01. That's the complete history!
Thanks guys....

Slap a piston in it, check the squish and ring gap. Does the rod feel like it moves up & down ie any slop at all? If not, its probably OK.
That should be all you need. Bottom end can go 15+ hours with high compression on a CR125. |

Hey Tony, not cool, bud. To post the (negative) 'opinion' of another engine builder regarding someone elses work is pretty touchy stuff. JR at PSR is a class guy with a very loyal following. He has contributed greatly to this community over on TKWS. He does not deserve to be slandered like that. One engine builder's interpretation of what's right or wrong is highly subjective.
Next time you're trying to do something as innocent as get advice on a rebuild, you might consider editing the quote from someone else. Especially when it's of an inflammatory nature.
My opinion.

I don;t think not editing the info was out of line... TG clearly stated it wasn't his words and said this was an un-edited message.
I know JR and I don't think he would take offense to something someone said 3 or 4 years ago that he probably has never even heard of. Including that info actually helped me out with advice to Tony that I just emailed... so no biggie.
Hopefully, people will be less sensitive to this type of stuff on the web. After all... words don;t kill people.. guns do *grin* ..oh snap... i'll bet i'll get sacked for that one for sure!

Mr. Bosarge,
I was not trying to drag anyones name or company through the mud, that wasn't my intention. Secondly, I didn't make the statement regarding the other companies work, in which sounds very biased on the other parties behalf. Regarding what the other company said about the other companies work, I'd still have PSR do the motor work since originaly they did the engine work to it in the first place, even if it had been talked down. IMO, I have no doubt that PSR does good work, and if someone advised me to send it to PSR, thats were the engine would go. Lastly, I kept the names of the business mentioned in the original so if someone had an opinion regarding my original question, they could say send it here, or send it there.... Knowing that the engine has been to a couple of different engine builders, I just wanted to know where to send it, to either of them if any at all, supposing someone advised to have a "local" reputable motor builder do the work.
PS: Marc, your making me laugh causing severe (more) rib pain and damamge Hehh heh....
No harm intended -

No offense taken, in fact if someone didn't find something they would do different (better) after that much time had passed, I would be surprised. This techniques in this business move so fast that three months is the world, much less three years. I do appreciate the concern of our PSR friends though!
This is a rather old post but we just got on line with the new forum. I couldn't believe there were five pages of shifter kart threads, wow!
Cheers everyone, J.R. |
