Hey Guys,
anyone have a clue why my 2000 CR80 is intermittently cutting out at high rpm? I thought it was my PI box, but I swapped it with a stock box and it still happened.
It would run fine all day and towards the end of the day, it would start cutting out...with both boxes, PI and stock.
Could a coil or stator have this symptom?
I'd appreciate any input.
Thanks.

John,
You have at least seperated the box from the equation. The first thing to check is the ground for the coil. Second would be the plug, change it, even if it is new. Don't forget about the gap, and also the brand of plug. I won't even mention how long it took me to find that problem. It is always possible for the stator or pickup to fail, but usually it is terminal. These ignition systems are so simple, sans PI boxes, that it should run without any problems or not.
Also, do you have a kill switch? It could have vibration sickness.

If an ignition component has an intermitant problem it will generaly show up when the component has gotten hot.
Check the obvious, bad grounds, insulation breakdown and loose connections. Bad reeds can often cause a problem that may sound/feel like an electrical problem.
Check the fuel lines and fittings. |

| John, I had a similar problem on a 125 Honda. I changed everything! After 6 months of pulling my hair out, I found that the coil was too close to the cdi box on the back of the seat.(causing RF interference ??) Once I moved the coil back to the cyl. head the problem was gone. Good Luck!! Greg |

I had a similar problem last year with my CR125. After much troubleshooting on ignition, fuel and carb systems, I found a tiny crack in the ignition wire where it enters the plug boot.
I've seen this problem occur frequently with others. |

| INtermittant cutting out at higher rpm can also be a sign of the secondary side of the coil going bad. |

thanks for the replies guys!
I'll change out the coil for this weekend and see what happens. It looks like the coil wire is bad.
Thanks again!

| Just a note to let you know that you don't have to change the coil for the HT wire. You can buy a new NGK wire and boot for about $15. the old wire will unscrew out of the coil and then you simply twist the new one in. The NGK replacement wire also comes with an additional protection sleve which is nice. |

thanks scott.
I'm going to do that when I get a chance but I don't have time to test before this weekend.
