I am trying to identify the year model (old) of a CR125 engine that is on an old shifter kart. All I have is the serial numbers on the engine, and the fact that it is in an old CRG kart, and the pipe says Pro-circuit/CRG.
Cast into the case under the countershaft sprocket is:
JE01E
Below that is:
2205209 (I think the last digit is a 9)
Can anyone help? |

| Take those numbers to your local Honda dealer and he should be able to tell you |

| Tried that. My local Honda dealer's parts/service counter guy was some young kid who said that if I didn't have the VIN off the bike, there was no way to identify it. I asked if there was any way to visually identify it, and he said no. I asked him about serial numbers, and he said that would not help. I kept waiting for him to ask me if I would like fries with my order, but at least that never happened. They were less than useless. |

John, I went through this routine two weeks ago and had the same thing happen. I went to the www.honda.com web site, clicked onto the motorcycle page, then went to the dealer page and proceeded to call about 5 of the dealers close to home. Finally found someone that would help and he correctly looked it up.

My neighborhood Honda dealer is the same way. Too busy selling scooters and snowblowers.

I'm pretty sure the JE01E are 1999. |

| John, I've email a file listing the serial numbers and years of Honda CR125's since 1990. Your motor may be Pre 1990. Does the engine have a large nose (square box) above the pipe outlet? If so, that is an ATAC exhaust valve system which pre dates the newer HPP exhaust valves. |

Chris, the Honda guy told me that all the CR125's have JE01E back to 89 or something like that. |

JE01E is the prefix for all honda cr125 motors thru at least 1990-1997. It may even be the prefix for other years but I don't have the documentation to prove it.
The important number in identifying the year of the motor is the trailing 7 digit number.
Don't forget however that from 1993 thru 1999 many of the parts are interchangable including the cylinders, heads, etc.
The serial number on the motor cases simply identifies the year of the cases. |

| Just to clarify why I listed 1993-1997 as compatible parts years is that sometime between 1991 and 1992 Honda switched to a flat-top piston and changed the head to accomodate the new piston style. Pre 1992 motors use a domed piston. |
