From the SKUSA online rulebook:
"S2 & S3 Engine Standards (2002)
2002 engine standards shall by revised and proper notification shall by posted by August 1, 2001."
This would be great if SKUSA can pull this off. It would give the racers and us shops plenty of time to prepare for the 2002 season. And hopefully all regions will adhere to all the rules in book. |

I do know that SKUSA is working very hard onthe rule book. I talked with the gentleman who is leading the charge on this is Barrie and he was cautiosly optimistic that that would indeed have it done by the first of August. If they can pull it off I think it would go a long way to reclaim of some of the luster SKUSA lost this spring over rules.

Doug,
If SKUSA can get the online version up by Aug.1 would be great.

This subject is shows the sorry state of affairs! How difficult is it to just set the rules up at the beginning of the season, and leave them alone until the end? It's not like this is something new to everyone. Am I just retarded here? Wait, don't answer that one...

I've been giving some thought to the issue of S2 engine rules and recalling what happened last winter with proposed changes. My understanding is that the changes (larger combustion volume etc.) will come into effect for the 2002 season.
I've never quite understood the rational for the proposed changes but assume the motivation s to keep costs down. I contend that requiring specific engine modifications, and buying smaller carbs actually adds costs.
My experience running a shoestring 125 entry over the last two years is that the big costs are travel, tires and engine work/maintenance. major cost saving was buying my kart on the used market and sleeping in the back of my Jeep!
Anyway my concept for a less expensive 125 class is simply focused on the big ticket items. First I'm looking for a VW turbo diesel to haul my bolt together trailer (no SKUSA regs here). Second YGB's are ok but MG's seam to allow my chassis to work better and it would save money if I could run the same tires for SKUSA as I run at the club events (MG greens seem to last just as long as the YGB's).
But now the big question....motor. I mentioned buying used as a big money saver. I seams there is a quantum leap in costs once you start chasing those last few horsepower i.e. ignition curves, latest and greatest pipes, pistons, silencers, carbs. So…. I'm sure it has been suggested, go with stock ignition? Of course then a TM for example apparently has a big advantage over a honda and others.
Well my answer is, and here's where it gets potential contentious... Pick one - TM, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki. The most obvious to me, as it would seam to be the most popular, easy to get parts for, and readily available on the all-important used market...Honda.
So the (my) S2 spec would be something like....MG green or equivalent, Honda motor any year, open MX type carb (no pumpers), no crank or case modifications except polishing of crank for bearing slip-fit and kick start boss reduction, open head cc, open pipe but stock Honda Ignition (no curves switches, sensors or any other changes (lots of good motors like this available on the used market). If the stator plate is spec (no mods) as well, it might take expensive engine repairs and maybe even race gas out of the budget too.
My thoughts….and bear in mind, I race S1 ‘cuz it is actually cheaper for me?(except for Barrie!!)

Larry,
The 2001 Rulebook would be good until Dec. 31, 2001.
The 2002 Rulebook which stated in the 2001 Rulebook, would be printed by August 1, 2001 and would not take effect until January 1, 2002.

Rick,
Yeah, I was. I was in critical for 6 days, but they got so sick of my friends showing up at all hours, that I was given the boot! (thanks Karl) I am too dumb to know better, so I guess I am on the rebound.
Sorry, but i am a bit slow these days and don't seem to get up to speed on the net as quickly as I would like (hence the late reply) Thanks for noticing my absence! Look forward to seeing you two at the next event. Maybe @ the Gold coast on the 18th.
