| Is there a difference between the bracket for the speed sensor that goes on the spindle on a 100cc kart(no front Brakes) and a 125 |

Yes,
Generally I have only seen wheelspeed pickups on 125's at the axle.
Personally I like to see them on front wheels. Less chance of locking a wheel and skewing the data. |

| I have seen them on the axle also but I don't see how your getting good readings without spikes, like dumping the clutch, I wonder if they even make a spindle mount sensor for front brake kart |

| Steve, You are correct. The data will slew with wheelspin and under braking. I have been making my own magnets for the front wheel pickups. You can get the magnets from McMaster Carr. The problem with the front brakes on a 125, is the amount of ferrous metal (disk) next to the sensor. If the hub is nonferrous, you might be able to bury a magnet over the bearing and use a standard pickup. E-mail me if you want to pursue this. John |

I think if you drop by http://www.RSwyers.com you'll see how this was done on Ronnies kart. Theres a pic there, and a description of the mounting of the speed sensor....
Shortcut to the photo of sensor: http://www.rswyers.com/2001_karting_technical_pics.htm

| Great topic!!! Especially since I'm installing a Mychron 2 on my new shifter tomorrow! Here's my question...The book says install the sensor 2-5 mm from the magnet. How far is that in American? 1/8 inch? 1/4 inch? Thanks |

kevin,
what kind of sensor did your my-chron come with because if you have the spindle mount I don't think you'll be able to do it with the brake being there, sound like axle mounting is the only some what easy way. |

Hi Steve,
Taking a break from the Mychron installation and saw your post. I'm trying to mount the speed sensor to the rear axle. I got the kit from AIM with the axle collar for the magnet and a bracket for the sensor which is pretty worthless since the bracket and sensor still need some homemade piece to mount them to the frame that is what I'm struggling with now. The current thinking is to get a bar that I can bend 90 dgrees at the right place and drill a hole for the sensor and then use the double nuts that come with the sensor as a way to fine-tune the air gap between the magnet and sensor. All other suggestions greatly appreciated! |
