Yep. Actually rears are required for 100cc and below and rear AND FRONT are required for any class over 100cc, like 125cc gearbox. Having only front could cause you to loose control if you locked up the fronts. Don't go and get yourself killed.
That means no JATO packs on karts either.

I'm with Mark 100% on this one. In the few times I've had my bias too much front, the braking was scary and just not effective.
Be safe, race fast.

A question, maybe seeming obvious to you, but I've never raced shifters (still in four stroke, and yamaha):
Can you run front brakes on an 80cc shifter.
Also if you were to not run front brakes/rear brakes in a race, not only would you be illegal (as I just found out) but you would also be really slow, becuase you'd have reduced braking power.

You can run Rear AND Front brakes in darn near every class (a few classes or clubs don't allow them, check your rule book) but some classes you just don't need it. If you take tire size, weight of kart and speed, rear brakes alone are plenty enough to slow down 90% of sprint classes. It's not like the kart weighs 1200lbs and you are going 130 into a tight hairpin, you just don't need the brakes. Karting is more like stab the brakes back on the gas or just set the kart with them for most classes. 125's do haul butt and weigh around 400lbs so the brakes are neccessary but an 80 isn't really any faster than a 100cc Yamaha so front brakes are not going to be THAT advantageous. Use your dough on new tires or something.
