I have run two events so far (I bought my kart specifically for autox), and basically ran head to head with s2000s (first time out) on a "longer" course, and took second by .04 to a well set up race built tvr (gutted and 289 transplanted) on a very tight course...

If I could keep the kart running for more than 6 runs, I might have taken first against the tvr... He was pretty fast...


If you are autoxing, what region, and do you run the scca events?

(they "sanction" kart autoxing in the nyr or ny region...)

I'm in the San Francisco Region and run regional, divisional and National Autocrosses.

I run a Birel/Moto and my son runs in Formula Junior with a Trackmagic/Briggs World Formula.

Comparatively speaking, how far behind the moto is the world formula? And, I assume you are running a 125?

How fast is your kart compared to other cars on the same track?

Essentially, the karts should run as faster than any fendered car. There's only a couple of classes that "should" be faster than F125 and that's A Modified (monster open wheel huge wing six figure cars) and sometimes Formula SAE (google it if you've never heard of it). Maybe a good B or C Modified car (still open wheel or DSR's).

Once the driver and chassis is good enough, fendered cars aren't even a challenge.

I run in Detroit and SVR regions and also the Cendiv series where we have some really good F125 drivers and also good AM, BM, and CM fields. George Bowland's AM car trounces F125 when he shows up as will the BM cars on raw time with any of the top drivers like Bruce Domeck. The power to weight of the BM cars is superior to the karts so they are almost always faster. F125 will usually beat CM and has a tougher index, but it is course dependant and sometimes a favorable CM course will allow them to turn faster times. I drive both F125 and CM and the CM car is far better at high speed sweeper speed maintenance type courses than the kart. The kart is capable of changing speed more quickly than CM. From the drivers perspective the F125 feels much faster and there is a much higher exposure factor than the Formula Ford. Going 70-80 in the Formula Ford feels much more 'comfortable' than it does in the kart. Although you are close to the same height off the ground, the body work on the FF removes some of the sense of speed you get in the kart plus the suspension removes a lot of the smaller bumps. Large bumps suck in both because of the low ride height the FF's run for autocross, it usually means a hard bottoming out on the floor pan. One really cool thing about the kart is even a course that people complain about being tight is still fast in the kart!

Are you running shifter karts or a direct drive like a Rotax??? I would think autocrossing in a Rotax would be a challenge esp. if the track is short and tight. Plus, with only one run the tires wouldn't get up to heat until the end of the run???

Everyone pretty much runs shifters, with some TAG's seen at events. Direct drive doesn't work with the standing start...

I run my Rotax.

I'm usually the only kart there. I've only seen three a mods in real life (during the national tour) and every so often a couple of F500s show up but other than that everything has fenders.

We're from the Atlanta Region. We'll be running all local, regional, and National events we can. I'll be splitting my time between the kart and the F500 I've been driving. My son Matthew will be driving the kart as soon as he turns 16 in April. Matthew's been a Red Bull qualifier for the last two years so he already has karting skills that I don't have.
