I recived my new 2001/2002 WKA Tech Manual in the mail yesterday. Two months before Daytona

! I'm always ready to complain when its December and I still don't have the new Tech book yet. Soooo, I just want to say thanks WKA for the extra effort, Nice Job !

I wonder why WKA doesn't just post the rules on the web?

SKUSA is the only karting org operating in the twenty-first century when it comes to rulebook publishing. Not that their rules are better or worse thn any other org, only that they provide a copy for all to see.

I just wish WKA, KART, and IKF had the decency to do the same.

It cost the various racing organizations a lot of time, effort and money to come up with a set of rules. Why should they put it on the web for all non-members to see it for free? I wouldn't. The organizations provide a copy free to their respective members. They have no oblgation to provide it to non-members for free also.

That is, unless they'd like more people to attend their events, prepped and ready tech-wise. Kinda sounds like a no-brainer to me!

Skuza also has quite a few less classes and series to post rules for.

You can't race in a WKA or IKF event unless you are a member. When you become a member they give you a rule book for free. If you are not going to join and race with them you don't need their rule book.

The challenge we have has become pretty big. Here in Texas we have locals who run KART, SKUSA, IKF and WKA about in that order. Our local track runs currently runs under mostly KART rules, with some SKUSA classes.

Have any of you seen the threads on fragmentation? So how do we satisfy our local club members without alienating them? Take a look at 125 shifters. Out of 20 entrants at a club race, we have 3 classes. But the rules for KART, SKUSA and IKF provide 9 different classes.

At what point is a club capitalist? Is hoarding tech data really in the members best interest? This is half of why we have such a serious fragmentation problem.

So what should a local track owned by the members who race various orgs do, kick out the members who won't run the majorities sanction?

Would it be possible for the local clubs who control the tracks get together and lay down the rules to the orgs? Maybe thats a bit far-fetched, but then maybe not.....

Badger also posts the class requirements online. Basically, we post the basic specs of each class. It's also noted that we follow the WKA rule book except where noted in ours, so it's makes it a lot easier to post to the web.

I know WKA charges approx. $12 for the rule book. Maybe it's a good money maker. Hard to say. Makes you really wonder if cross-over racers is a large number or just a small # and if it would be worthwhile publishing it live.

Another thought, the SECOND they post it live, some org will copy it and call it their own! So maybe it's to protect their investment (see Paul Harraka's reply above).

I just got my Tech manual yesterday. I was pretty impressed with the cover (probably because it's MY photo of Zack Emmons carrying the flag! (gloat gloat)). Nice Job Mike Traylor!

I never read the rule book. I just read Randy's column to make sure I haven't been suspended, then I double check it with the minutes of the meeting. They haven't have a single board meeting in the last 2 years where my name didn't come up at least once. It kind of gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling.

I don't think anyone has copied SKUSA's rulebook, but I wish they would. KART is a close copy of the IKF rulebook. WKA? don't know.

Would't it be wonderful if they all did copy one rulebook? Would that really take away value from the originating body? Not at all. From there it is just a matter of the people skills within the organizations to maintain membership.
