Where or How should one displace of their used tires?

Any suggestions welcomed.

This is an issue that has needed to be dicussed for a long time. After every major Regional or National we have left over tires that we have no way of disposing. This is even after we announce that the racer must take their old tires home with them. Someone always tries to hide them in the barrels under the trash. We have talked a long time about haveing a used tire cage and charging 1.00 per tire for hauling them to a recycleing center. We can not put them in the dumpster because this becomes and EPA violation and we can not bury them for the same reason. We have a couple of tire recyclers in the area that charge .75 to 1.00 to take them. Are racers willing to accept this cost for the service?

but FWIW,

atleast in roadracing, most tracks use car tire bariers which for karts can still be damaging. could kart tires packed properly together, say 4x4x4 be a good enough barier to slow down karts and provide some cusion? This may be just heavy enough for a safety barier?!?! these could be placed in front of car tire bariers or other places...

The ones we don't give away that still have some life in them, we take to the recycler. Had the van full of about 30-35 tires. Guy gave me the standard price for tires at teh gate, but when he saw that they were small kart tires, he charged me $10 for the whole lot of them!

Contact the local companies who produce paving materials. Many of then blend material from ground up tires into their mix. They may direct you to a person who will either accept the tires for grinding or charge you a small fee to grind the tires.

It gets them out of the waste stream and back into the raw material stream.

Thanks to all who replied. Maybe my mind is distorted, but it doesn't seem right that we should have to pay a recycler to take tires from us.

Is recycling tires a losing proposition financially?

On the note about using kart tires as a barrier. I think that was a good thought, I've had similar thoughts, but it is my understanding that for tires to be effective they must be bolted or put together in a certain manner to reach their maximum safety potential.

I think any bolts inside a used kart tire could actually become dangerous so unless there is a better way of attaching them together I don't see how it could be beneficial in a crash.

Maybe if they were wrapped up in a snow fence material maybe? The idea is good one maybe with more thought it could be beneficial.

Nope, basic economics. There are LOTS of used tires sitting around and not many places that recycle them. Thus, they can charge on both ends.

Most states have a "waste tire" fee on new tires sold. These fees help clean up land fills and ileagle tire dumps. They also created (at least here in Arkansas) waste tire collection facilities. The scrap tires are used as fuel, ground up and used as playground cover, as a base filler in asphault and other projects. As for getting rid of your used kart tires, try talking to your local tire dealer, you know the one you by your car, truck and trailer tires from. You would be surprised at the ones that would just throw them in there with there scrap tires for free, or a very small charge.

We have been thinking about using kart tires as barriers and we all think that the tires are just too small. Not enough give or compression . Also, tire barriers just trash karts when you hit them! I'd be interested in hearing if anyone successfully used kart tires in this fashion.

Also, on recycling, I DOUBT they recycle them but actually they are putting them in landfills or .... That's what we're paying for. Can you imagine melting the rubber down off the cords to use again? Doesn't sound possible let alone cost effective. Again, it would be interesting if someone "in the know" would chime in.

Oh yeah. One good use is for transporting karts. We jam them under the rear bumpers or set the tires on them when the karts are lying flat in the trailer. Helps keep them from moving around. I also jam used tires between objects to prevent scuffing when transporting.

Of course, our club runs hard tires so we're talking MAYBE 8 tires a year.

If you cut them into 4 pieces with a saber saw, they are no longer tires and you can put them in with the regular trash a little at a time.

Being the owner of both Race ansd show horses I know that many horse owners and horse boarding facilities buy shredded rubber (from tires) for indoor and outdoor arenas. The tires must have the steel belts extracted from them before the shredded material is used and I guess the machine to do this is very costly. Since karting tires aren't steel belted, they seem to be and ideal product. Like Marshal said, make a tire cage for the tires, collect them and contact a shedding facility.Shredded rubber footing has become very popular, no dust, and doesn't wash away in the rain. Plus its easy on the animals legs!

I've cut them up to smaller pieces and use them as spacers when mounting body work, or between lead weights and the backs of seats.
I've used my make shift spacers around the house and on the boat, my neighbors have even asked for some. I use a Roto-Zip saw and cut them to any size needed and drill a hole through them

PERFECT!!! Thanks for the great suggestion, Mark. It seems like I'm always looking for some rubber spacer...

Also:
My buddies have filled four of them with concrete for E-Z-UP leg weights. You can use an eyebolt in the center for bungee ties or a threaded rod to screw the foot down.

Now, where is my Roto-Zip....
