Rhonda,
Better hurry with the input for curing. They plan to start laying asphalt within two weeks.

Thats what I was told.

Check with some experts. There are asphalt mixes that work very well for racing surfaces, and others that are a waste of money. Road mixes typically don't work well for racing surfaces. They are designed to carry heavy tire loads, not high lateral forces. Talk to track owners like Gateway International. There is a consultant in Indiana that specializes in racing surfaces. This is an excerpt from a message I got a couple of years back with a name:

"The people that I work with that do race track asphalt design are from Heritage Research in Indianapolis. The person you would want to call is Bill Pine. His number is (317) 486-2981. He travels quite a bit, so it may be difficult to get in touch with him very quickly."

Rusty, I have been following the progress of the new track. I just hope that they let it sit and cure over the winter. Torn up asphalt would not give a very good race surface. I have heard that they plan on haveing an event as soon as possible this year and feel that a little patience would give us a good racing surface for years to come. Or we can get on it right away then deal with patching the corners from now on.

I assume we are talking about the new track in Grand Junction? If so I saw it last weekend on my drive to California, from what I could tell (passing it at 80 miles an hour) it looks pretty cool. I would second the notion that they should let it cure for the entire winter. They only get one chance on the initial asphalt lay, if it gets torn up they will have to start patching which never seems to work.

Also, how do you get to the track from the freeway? Kinda looks like it is in the middle of nowhere with no visable access roads (again at 80 MPH it was had to tell)

Russ

Thanks for the input. I will keep on the suggestions in my file for future use as well. I have already passed this info on to the promoter who was very grateful. He has also made a short announcement on another October 4th post...Grand Junction Colorado.

Pave it now and let it sit over the winter. A paving contractor that I know says it is best to have the rain fall on the track and let it cure slowly over the winter. More tracks have been ruined because the club is to anxious to race on it.
