Here's what happened: normal practice day out at Buttonwillow.
Decided to change to the 12 tooth driver. After removing the
drum, it was pretty clear that the lining on the clutch shoes
was shreadding. Big chunks missing. Didn't seem to impact
performance, but looks like a failure waiting to happen.
Anyone seen anything like that? |

I would like to see pictures of the damage. Then I can make a better determination of the cause.
You can send them directly to me at jimjr@russellkarting.com

Unfortunately, I don't have a digital cam handy. In words, it would appear
that small chunks of the lining are being removed. I think that most of the
resulting voids are less than one mm at the lining surface and they tend
to be conical (so that the size of the void decreases below the lining
surface--small conical craters). |

If the damage is only on the surface this seems to happen mostly on tracks that are dirty. It does not seem to hurt performance.
My theory is that a small piece of debris gets into the lining material and then rips out a small chunck of friction material.
