Have any of you put a pen to the actual cost of the paving and ground work to create a track? I know that costs differ around the country for materials and labor but would like to have any input on this.

Thanks

Pat

$38.5 mil? Ouch! Let me get my checkbook...

My high school just built a new football stadium for less than US$10 mil. Looking at some of the sprint tracks I've been to here in the Midwest US I doubt any of them spent more than a few hundred thousand (if that).

I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but for that kind of money you should be able to build several tracks. Or one monster facility.

$38.5 million seems very high when you consider that Penske build the track at Fontana for around $125 million.

Hello Todd,
The way in which this facility was costed, was using the best of everything. Unfortunately, what is the best today, is second best tomorrow.
The design of this facility would make it almost impossible to change, once it has been completed.
Service, comfort, facilities and value for money, are the things that most karting people are screaming out for.
One of my pet hates is, you spend all weekend at a track, for 1 hour of track time.
What do you do the rest of the time?
IMO, this is one of the major reason's for the high turnover in karting. We did some figures last year and it was costing us about US$8.55 per lap of racing, and for this you get the privaledge of standing around in the wet, cold and muddy pit areas to try and win a US10 trophy.

Hi Pat,
If anyone was really serious about building a world class facility,it is a lot of money.
If you include the land and every other little thing that you can think of,including all the facilities to keep the mum's,wives and children happy.
Sealed pit areas
Lighting/Power/airlines to every pit-bay
each pit-bay is 225 sq feet per kart (600 karts)
4200 foot sprint-track
3200 foot hire-kart track
it goes on and on and the exact cost, US$38,585,673.
We have done this costing approximately 2 years ago

Asphalt here in Colorado costs $9.00 per square yard. So how long and how wide do you want it?

Dirt work depending on where your located and the site can be as little as $50,000 if you are building on sand or 4 times that if you have to bring in base.

A simple building and some basic stuff like lights and power can easily add another $100,000 to $200,000. Even a simple steel building will cost $50 per square foot and up depending on how you finish it off.

So you can see, you need at least $500,000 plus what ever you plan to spend for the land. You also need some extra cash to buy off the local government officials, opps I mean to get zoning and planning approval.

Doug

Pat - $38M does seem a bit extreme, not everyone needs a heli port which sounds like was probably included in their plans. If that track every comes about, let me know, I want to vacation there!

I work with race promoters for the International Kart Federation and I have some leads on knowledgeable consultants who can be of assistance to you. If you'll e- mail me, I'll be more than happy to provide.

I would like to make an offer to all the majors in the industry to step up to the plate and help in the costs of a major venue karting facility. I know Briggs & Stratton have done just that but would like to see Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Rotax etc... do something to better the sport not just sell us motors at 2000.00 - 3000.00 a pop. I know that Karting is a minority in motorsports but with help we can become the best user participating motorsport in the country.
Well we all like to dream a little but I am putting out a challenge to the Big Guns to come forth and help in the financing of top quality motorsports complexs across the USA, in turn you will see a rise in sales and great promotional value. Just think of it
"The HONDA Motorsports Complex"
"The YAMAHA Motorsports Complex"
"The ROTAX Motorsports Complex"
"The KAWASAKI Motorsports Complex"

I think buy incorporating other types of motorsports (eg.MX Moto Road Racing, Dirt Track, Paved oval, etc..),into the single area you could produce one of the finest motosports complex in the world.
Come on put something back into the sport from which you make $$$

Uhh thats what I think yeah.....

38 million and that was 2 years ago? So maybe these days39-40 million to build a sprint track?!?! Don't mean to be out of line but that seems quit insane.

As some of you may know a rolling 2001 Reynard CART chassis is $800,000 to $1,000,000. So with your figures I could field almost 2 complete grids of CART 'rollers' for 2002 ?!?!

32 Reynard rollers or one sprint track, that doesnt make sense.

How much, how big how fancy...

Figure at least 20 acres minimum if you one day want 200 karts to show up tightly packed in.

Lets say 40 acres of US prime flood plain next to an airport, train track, or toxic dump site.

$200,000 depending on local market of course.

Add in the cost of a decent track with some medium grading work, maybe $3.00 a SqFt on a good day.

3500'*20'*$3.00/SqFt = $210,000

Need some concrete pit runner and paddock, another $5.00/SqFt*((200'*10')+(50'*100')

$35,000

Fence say 3000 linear feet at $12 a foot

$36,000

Be nice to have at least a used trailer to store track stuff in.

$3000

Funny how you can get by without water, but gotta have electricity. Somehow $10000 doesnt buy much copper these days.

Licenses drawings, EPA approvals etc. -
$10,000

Lets see thats $504K so far.

You may want to find a lawyer worth their salt. What the heck am I saying..be easier to find Blackbeards treasure.... Let me try over again.

You will want to consult a lawyer before starting and have them file any scripts with the county to assure that you have some protection form nuisance type suits, and that other development processes are in order.

$325/hr* 40 hours = $13000

So for a bare bones 6/10 mile 20' wide track with a 110 volt plug, no varmints free to roam across the track, and place to store something, that works out to about,

$517,000

Can be done for more, can be done for less, thats a basic estimate.

Did you guys build this faciltiy, or is this just an estimate?

In the States, we could build quite a nice facility for a couple million, or something barebones for about half a mil.

With a facility that expensive, how does one make any money, let alone pay for the cost of development?

Hi Pat,

Our local club has built a brand new 1.1 km long 9m wide track this spring and it is one of the nicest I have ever seen. I'm not sure of exact figures but I think it was approx $300,000 cdn dollars. You can contact our club's website at www.ckrc.com and try to e-mail someone in charge.
