| eKartingNews.com Driver Rankings - April 18 |
| |
EKN is happy to release the April edition of the eKartingNews.com Driver Rankings for the ICC and TaG divisions. The first national race is in the books with regional programs just getting underway over the next few weeks. Halfway into the month of April, we lose a handful of 2007 races from mid-March to mid-April, including the Race of the Americas.
The top of the ICC rankings remains familiar with Gary Carlton still on top despite losing 200 points off his score with the drop of the Race of the Americas victories with Fritz Leesmann still chasing. Along with the drop of the opening Stars event from 2007 off the rankings, Devon Sandeen falls in the TaG rankings, handing the P1 spot to Joey Licata Jr. with other new names climbing their way up the standings.

Two-time defending ICC national champion Gary Carlton has basically made himself at home a top the ICC Driver Rankings. Since the end of the 2006 season, the CRG pilot had not been moved, recording multiple wins along the way. His latest was at the recent Stars of Karting Eastern Division opener at Ocala Gran Prix. Battling the wet, Carlton was dominating in qualifying and the heat races until a mechanical problem put him out of the first final. He would return to continue his stellar pace in the second final for his first victory of the 2008 season. The next two Stars events - Miller and New Castle, Carlton recorded four wins last year. This will force the rest of the field to step up their game to knock him off his perch.
Fritz Leesmann is working extremely hard at that. Racing and testing as much as possible, the PSL/Kohilo Racing driver was the early favorite in Ocala after leading all the practice sessions and coming off the Florida Winter Tour championship. Recording the other final victory in Ocala, both find themselves trailing in the East points championship to number three on the rankings - Jordy Vorrath. With his two runner-up finishes in Ocala, the Canadian moves up five spots in the rankings and is the target on the Stars East Division standings. The Champion Racing/Intrepid USA driver sits ahead of Cameron Motorsports Michael Vincec and Matt Jaskol, who will be focusing on his stock car program in Las Vegas.
The driver ‘On the Move’ this month is Californian Clayton Snow. Driving for the Syar Motorsport-Energy Team, Snow will campaign the Stars of Karting East and West schedule with support from the factory Energy Corse team in Europe. The opener was a success with two-six place finishes in Ocala, moving him up to 19th in the rankings.

While the ICC rankings remain static, the TaG Driver Rankings has seen a complete flip. IKF Region 7 TaG champion Joey Licata Jr. is the new #1 driver. The Biesse driver came onto the Stars schedule after the Race of the Americas, making his debut with a victory at Miller Motorsports Park. He followed that with five straight top-five finishes to end the year third overall in the championship, along with the rankings. With the RoA results removed, Devon Sandeen and Conor Daly, former #1 and #2, lost valuable points where as Licata’s total remains unchanged. Licata’s reign is questionable as his last rankings event was the SuperNationals in November.
Joey Wimsett moves up from fifth to second with the help of a strong second half in the 2007 season. The Champion Racing/Intrepid USA driver had a couple solid runs in Ocala for the Stars Eastern opener and should be a contender for the championship on the year. Florida Winter Tour Spec Racer champion Andy Lee moved up to the third spot with the highest ranking ICA transfer, Victor Cabrera Jr. The J3 Competition driver challenged Lee for the FWT title, winning four races in a row to close out the tour and was fastest on Friday practice at the Stars Ocala event until carburetor issues in qualifying put him mid-pack. Fellow ICA transfer Chris Wehrheim has been back and forth between the two classes in ’07 but will now focus his attention on a Stars TaG championship. His two dominate victories in Ocala put him at the front in the East championship chase along with putting him into the TaG Driver Rankings top five.
Another ICA transfer is our TaG driver ‘On the Move’ - Pat Iannucci. The G-Phactory/Sodi Racing USA pilot was looking forward to putting in his bid for the ICA championship this season after completing his first year with the team. With the absence of the class on the East, Iannucci was forced to the TaG division where he will now contend for the championship. Using the Florida Winter Tour as a warm-up, Iannucci has eclipse the seven race mark and now sits 20th in the rankings, with the likelihood of moving up further as the year goes on.
