For a driver to be successful, he or she must have one or more persons in their corner, helping to guide them in the right direction to finding the perfect set-up or the ideal line. Many of the best drivers in the sport in karting have had that one person or multitude of supporters to bounce ideas off of and the former Mechanic of the Year recipients reflect some of the best in the industry. They have all been able to provide that sounding board of support for their respective drivers. This year’s winner of the Mechanic of the Year honors is a family affair as Jeff and Rick Robinson - father and grandfather of WKA Triple Crown winner Cody Robinson - have earned this mark of distinction.
The 2007 season was an outstanding year for the Robinson family. With Cody behind the wheel of the BTK Motorsports/L&T Racing Clutches Arrow and Jeff and Rick turning the wrenches, the group was able to earn two Midwest Sprint Series championships, two Great Lakes Sprint Series championships, and a total of three WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series championships, earn Cody the prestigious WKA Triple Crown award.
Battling 30 drivers in four different classes all year long on the Man Cup schedule, the Robinsons were always on their game by sweeping the Junior divisions in two of the five events for a total of 12 victories, including a Grand National victory in Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Lite. It was in that division where Robinson was unstoppable, winning all five Finals on the year. In addition to the Yamaha and HPV classes, Robinson was also fast in the Rotax program. At the Rotax Grand Nationals in Denver, Colorado, the Robinsons were fast all week, placing fourth in the main event, just one spot short of earning a spot to the Rotax Grand Finals international event.
Successfully prepping the equipment for such an ambitious racing effort is impressive, as consistency is almost as important as speed at this level and Cody’s five problem-free Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Lite wins is outright amazing. As a result, EKN would like to congratulate the Robinson family for their successful 2007 season and becoming the first Mechanic of the Year award recipients for work with a Junior driver.
