Created in 2001, the Road Racer of the Year (RRoY) category highlights the best of the previous season’s competition in the nation’s road racing events. The RRoY is determined using the same criteria as the Driver of the Year - taking into account each nominee’s on-track performance, off-track conduct and professionalism with success in multiple series and at major road racing events throughout the year. EKN is proud to announce the 2007 Road Racer of the Year - Jim Russell Jr.
This year’s recipient did just that, traveling across the country to some of the biggest road racing events on the year and taking home victories - all within a five-week span. Beginning in Wisconsin at the Road America SuperNationals, the Russell Karting pilot earned victory in the competitive TaG Senior division, both Saturday and Sunday in photo finishes. Three weeks later, Russell competed at the KART Road Race Grand Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka. The TaG division was one of the biggest groups of the weekend and again Russell lead the way in both races, earning two KART Triads.
The next week, traveling to Reno-Fernley Raceway for the IKF Road Race Grand Nationals, Russell added two more TaG victories including two prestigious IKF Duffys that went with each win. What was more impressive than lapping the field during one of the races was the fact that Russell drove to victory with a couple of broken ribs. In total, Russell scored 14 wins in 15 races on the year. In addition to his TaG accomplishments, he also had some success in the shifter categories, taking a couple wins on the year along with photo finishes at Road America and Daytona, where he came just short of victory.
Russell was also racing with a heavy heart as his father - Jim Russell Sr. - had his life cut short following a motorcycle accident in Mexico back in March. ‘Big Jim’ was a long-time supporter of road racing throughout the country, providing sponsorship for many programs including the WKA National Road Race Series. Jim Jr., now the leader at Russell Karting, and the rest of the family continued that commitment in 2007 and for many years to come.
