EKN will have a race reports from Moroso throughout the weekend.
The Formula Kart Racing Florida Winter Tour Presented by Tony Kart Florida resumes its 10th season this weekend, February 16-17, at Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach, FL. Over 170 drivers have pre-entered for this event, as the FWT marches onward toward another record-breaking season.
PSL Karting.com Pro Shifter will once again make headlines with an ever-increasing list of drivers who’ve decided to join the FWT in search of a slice of the guaranteed minimum purse of $20,000. Returning from the first rounds in Homestead are points leader Danilo Dirani (Tony Kart Florida), Michael Vincec (CRG/Cameron Motorsports), Fritz Leesmann (CRG/PSL Karting), Stuart Marsell (BTK Motorsports/Arrow) and Alex Speed (Birel/MRP Motorsport).
But the bigger news coming out of the Pro Shifter ranks is that two-time and reigning ICC national champion Gary Carlton will be squaring off against the series regulars. Carlton’s performance over the last 30 months has been nothing short of staggering, with close to a dozen victories and a complete domination of the 2007 season.
The Firstkart.com JICA class is likely to draw a huge amount of attention, as Gustavo Menezes (Tony Kart USA) and Nick Neri (Maranello) currently share the top step of the standings with 185 points each. Daniel Vela (CRG/PSL Karting) lurks just 20 points behind, while class standouts and rookies such as Sage Karam, Spencer Pigot, defending champ Jarvis Gennari, Brendan Phinny, Tristan DeGrand and Taylor Miinch will also seek to challenge the points leaders.
Similar to the Homestead weekend, JICA promises to be the largest class of the weekend, with close to 40 karts on tap. The winner of each day’s JICA final at every FWT event weekend will receive a free press release from Autosports Media.
While controversy surrounding the Vortex Rok TT was the central talking point of the MRP/Birel America Spec Racer category during the Homestead weekend, some of that furor has died down and now the karters are getting down to the business of racing. Runaway points leader Andy Lee (Tony Kart USA) is sitting pretty with a perfect 200 tallies, courtesy of his pair of wins at Homestead. Sean Meier and Edward Fortier are among the pursuers, along with Victor Cabrera, Joey Wimsett, and Pat Iannucci. Expect over 30 karts to compete in this class at Moroso.
The evolution of the J3 Competition KF2 and Rysa Racing KF3 classes continues at Moroso, as the North American introduction of these engines at the Homestead event created a high level of interest throughout the karting community. Fabio Orsolon (Tony Kart Florida) made history with his KF2 wins at the first rounds, as he can lay claim to having won the first KF race in North America. Looking to challenge Orsolon at Moroso will be Joey Wimsett (Champion/Intrepid) and Christopher Grektorp. In KF3, look for Daniel Formal (Advanced Karting/Tony Kart) to build upon his two class wins from the first FWT weekend, with stiff competition from Marco Silva.
Both KF2 and KF3 points champions will receive Three Day Competition Courses from Skip Barber Racing School, an $8000 value. Because of the late announcement of these awards, and the introductory status of the KF classes, the FWT points championship for KF2 and KF3 awards will be a best 3 of 4 points championship beginning this weekend at Moroso.
Jason Lee (MKP Motorama) entered 2008 with the goal of avenging a runner-up finish in last year’s FA Kart Masters Shifter title chase; he kicked off this season in perfect style, winning both of the opening races last month. Tied for second are Gustavo Vidal and Kurt Mathewson, both just 25 points behind Lee. It will be up to both of them to take the fight to Lee here at Moroso and reduce his points lead.
CMW Engines Stock Moto was witness to the rise of two main protagonists; Bryan Eady (Champion/Intrepid) and Jose Zanella (FA Kart). While Eady leads the points, Zanella has some ground to make up after a mental mistake led to a retirement within laps of a potential Homestead win. That left Mathew Mair to trail Eady by 25 points entering this weekend.
S1 Racing Kart Cadets should boast over 20 karts at Moroso, with Santino Ferrucci, Jacques Saurino, Carlos Abreu and Austin Self all in with a chance for the class title. The winner of each day’s Cadet final at every FWT event weekend will receive a free press release from Autosports Media.
