eKartingNews.com Introduces Winter Rotax Driver Rankings

With the concept of TaG (Touch and Go) kart racing exploding across North America, the Rotax program is also growing at the local and national level. Each year, the Rotax Grand Nationals continues to produce record numbers, great racing and tough competition, thanks in part to its pure engine format. Included in this growth are two very separate areas of the continent, Florida and the West Coast. Nearly half of the main event grids at the 2007 Grand Nationals were made up from drivers from Florida, California, Oregon, and Washington.

This winter, both areas of the country are hosting a six-race, three weekend program with trips to the Rotax Grand Nationals and even spots to the 2008 Rotax Grand Finals. The Sunshine State has the Florida Winter Tour (FWT) while the newly-formed Gatorz Challenge of the Americas (CoA) gives the West Coast drivers their own program. Both aimed at providing the most racing possible against the best competition, promoters Bill Wright (FWT) and Andy Seesemann (CoA) are working together to meet that goal. To help both programs grow, eKartingNews.com has developed the Winter Rotax Driver Rankings, matching up the pilots in the Senior categories - DD2, Rotax Senior, and Rotax Masters.

“Since we created our TaG Driver Rankings at the beginning of last year, we have tried to find a way to give those Rotax-only programs the same courtesy,” stated EKN News Desk Manager David Cole. “With so many local Rotax programs running across the United States, as well as Canada, we simply don’t have the time or the manpower to manage a Rotax-only rankings system. With the introduction of the Challenge of the Americas, we thought that a Rotax Driver Ranking that matched up the East vs. West would be fun for all…as well as providing some bragging rights heading into the season.”

Wright - often seen around the paddock wearing his ‘interesting’ hats - and Seesemann - no stranger to Masters competitors - have been working together since the announcement of the Challenge of the Americas back in August. Each worked the final months of 2007 making sure each others events did not fall on the same weekend, and both are supporting each others events. Seesemann is competing in the Masters division in the FWT while Wright is handling the mic duties for the CoA events.

The basic principal of the EKN Winter Rotax Driver Rankings will to count the best five point totals for each driver in their respective class using the format - similar to the other EKN Driver Rankings - described below. Today, and at the end of February and March, EKN will release the latest edition of the rankings. This month's rankings can be viewed HERE.

The EKN Winter Rotax Driver Rankings will be calculated using a driver’s best five point totals of the Florida Winter Tour and Challenge of the Americas from January to March. To deliver this ranking list, EKN will give each event a base ranking of nine (9). Added to the initial ranking are two variables that help rank each race - field size and field strength. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, while the number of 2007 Rotax Grand Nationals main event qualifiers offers another full point or fraction of a point. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for each race.

Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing position with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each race.
