| Team News: Pulp Racing - SKUSA SuperNationals Report |
| |
2007 was another great year for Pulp Racing’s drivers at the SuperKarts! USA SuperNationals. With their three drivers running in a total of five events, Pulp Racing had an astounding performance on Super Sunday at Sam Boyd Stadium in the Stock Honda classes.
In the S4 Heavy class, filled with 36 of North America’s best drivers over 35 years of age and/or weighing more than 200 lbs, Jeff Littrell dominated for the second year in a row, crushing the field with a flag-to-flag victory and winning the S4 Championship by over 14 seconds. Teammate Doug Hayashi made it to the podium for the Main race for the first time in three attempts by taking 3rd Place.
To make it to the podium in the S4 class, Pulp Racing teamed up with 2WildKarting and utilized the latest 2008 Tony Kart Krypton KRV chassis with Stock Honda power from Darcy DeCoste of DDR. Tuning assistance from Jason Hettervick (2WildKarting) and Jason Steaman (Pulp Racing) allowed the team to be fast and avoid any mechanical problems throughout the weekend.
In the S3 Light class, filled with 37 of the fastest Stock Honda drivers in North America regardless of age or weight (average age under 25, with half of the field under 20 years old), Pulp Racing had the two oldest drivers in the class (Doug Hayashi and Wayne Mello are both 48 years old, with Jeff Littrell a spring chicken at 44). Despite their age handicap, and the fact that Hayashi and Littrell were running twice the distance as other drivers, the Pulp Racing team still managed to put two drivers in the top 10. Hayashi finished 7th, and Littrell finished 9th after starting from the 11th and 19th spots. Earlier in the week, both drivers crashed during qualifying, resulting in less than stellar grid positions. Then, Littrell got rear-ended in Heat Race 1 and Hayashi was looking at a second row spot for the Main until he got punted in Heat Race 3, thus pushing him back to row 6. Teammate Wayne Mello started picking up the pace later in the week, but was a victim of a couple of gnarly mid-pack crashes, thus hindering his push to make it to the top 10 in the Main.
Pulp Racing would like to thank SuperKarts! USA for a highly organized and incredibly fun week of racing. The Pulp Racing team feels that the Stock Honda shifter classes combine fast racing excitement and great competition at a relatively affordable cost compared to other forms of the Go-Fast Crack Pipe. They are looking forward to the SuperKarts USA WinterNationals, where they will throw their hats into the ring of the S3 class. (S4 drivers note: You won't have to deal with Littrell/Hayashi/Mello at the WinterNationals).
Credit also goes to the local southern California ProKart Challenge (PKC) series for providing the competition needed to compete at a National event like the SuperNationals XI. Over the past year with the PKC, Pulp Racing was able to duke it out in the Stock Honda Class with up-and-coming young drivers such as Nick Halen, Connor De Phillippi, Bobby Legate, and Clinton Schoombee, as well as older seasoned veterans like Alex Barron and Bonnier Moulton. Without the ProKart Challenge series, the old farts from Pulp Racing would probably be sitting around, talking about when they used to be fast, eating Bon Bons, and watching Oprah. Instead, they are scheming every day to improve their driving skills in an attempt to podium at ProKart Challenge races. Pulp Racing will be back with a vengeance at SuperNationals XII in an attempt to make it to the podium of the S3 class against the best Stock Honda drivers in the Nation.
S4 drivers take note: Littrell says he's retiring from S4 for SuperNationals XII, so the top spot will be open in next year's battle to become the fastest old/"muscular" Stock Honda driver.
