Things couldn’t have been going better for the PCH Motorsports team in the early stages of the SuperPro main event at the SKUSA SuperNationals on Sunday. Defending champion Gary Carlton was running down polesitter Marco Ardigo, with teammate for the week Jonathan Thonon giving chase. The gap was closing and there were nearly 25 laps left in the race.

Thonon had made a bold move on Carlton on the fourth lap and set sail for his European nemesis. Carlton tucked in and went along for the ride to the lead, and when Thonon made the pass for the lead stick, nearly went by as well. However, he made contact with Ardigo, hurting his kart.

Thonon and Ardigo swapped the lead several times on one lap, and Thonon put his CRG firmly into the lead. As he had in the third heat race on Saturday, Thonon began to slowly but efficiently pull a lead over Ardigo. Unfortunately, his lead would be short-lived as his shifter arm broke on the seventeenth lap. And just like that, he was out.

This left Carlton to take the fight to Ardigo. However, the contact with Ardigo had bent his steering shaft and knocked his alignment out of whack. Carlton would wheel his CRG home in second, ahead of Jeremy Iglesias and Davide Fore, and would be the only North American karter to finish in the top four. On his home turf, Carlton proved that he has earned the right to run with Europe’s best.

Carlton’s trophy would fit on the shelf in the PCH Motorsports hauler right next to Connor DePhillippi’s trophy that he scooped when he won the S1 race earlier in the day. DePhillippi converted his third-starting spot to second early and inherited the lead on the fifth lap when the leader’s kart broke. DePhillippi survived a late-race restart after a red flag, and took a victory.

An emotional DePhillippi took the top step of the podium at the SuperNats for the fourth time – and is the only person to ever do it four times. It was a fantastic way for the ProKart Stock Honda champion to end his first weekend underneath the PCH Motorsports tent.

Fellow PCH Motorsports teammate Chris Carmody grabbed sixth in the TAG Senior main.
