The 2007 Snap-on Stars of Karting series wrapped up the Western Division schedule over the September 15-16 weekend at the Moran Raceway. The weather was perfect - a first in the four times the series has visited the Beaumont, California facility with bright sunshine and no clouds in the sky. The top two constructors of the year have obviously been CRG and Intrepid as they stretched out their lead on the rest, going 1-2 at Moran and also stealing points from other constructors, scoring three or more drivers in the top ten in multiple classes. Top Kart made up ground on Tony Kart to head locked up for third heading into the National Finals.

With 101 points, CRG posted the second best overall weekend total of the year, behind their 103 score at the Mazda Race of the Americas. PCH Motorsports’ Gary Carlton and privateer Miles Maroney each scoring two wins on the weekend. Carlton was backed up in ICC with Fritz Leesmann (Wunder-Bar Racing) running third both days. Maroney had fellow privateer Garrison Masters finishing fourth and fifth to give CRG a good amount of points. Cody Jolly (Cameron Motorsports) finished second on Saturday and nearly won Sunday’s final until contact put him back to tenth on Sunday. Jacob Neal (PCH Motorsports) and Jake Rosenzweig (PSL Karting) each had a fourth place finish adding to Jolly’s totals. CRG was shut out during Saturday’s Spec Racer final but bounced back Sunday with sixth and eighth place runs by Nicholas Fairney (TrueNorth Motorsports) and Joey Collins (SSC Racing).

Intrepid had its best weekend of the year with a score of 90 led by the strong Spec Racer contingent. Colin Katzakian (Diede Racing/LEM) and Canadian Devon Sandeen (Checkered Flag Racing) each took home a win, along with Sandeen finishing behind Katzakian to earn the Western Division Spec Racer title. Joey Wimsett (Leading Edge Motorsports) had two top five finishes, his runner-up finish on Sunday counting toward the Intrepid total. Champion Racing’s Jordy Vorrath recorded two second place runs in ICC along with recording a new track record. Leading Edge Motorsports’ new ICC driver Lorenzo Mandarino finished fifth and sixth in his Stars debut weekend aboard an Intrepid. Tyler Dueck (Champion Racing) was the top Intrepid driver, running sixth and second as Scott Jenkins (Champion Racing) struggled, only recording a best sixth Sunday. Canadian Scott Rossi (Leading Edge Motorsports) also had a difficult weekend with a seventh place finish as his best run.

Third on the weekend was Shawano top performer Team Top Kart USA, who had a up and down weekend in Beaumont. Saturday was saw five drivers score points in the four divisions. Matt Jaskol finished eighth in ICC, Chris Wehrheim record a third place in ICA and Ty Matta was tenth in Spec Racer. Branden Underwood and Brendan Phinny were second and sixth in JICA for Top Kart to complete their 26 point Saturday performance. Sunday was just Spec Racer and JICA with Matta again scoring a top ten finish (fifth) while Conor Daly bounced back from a bad Saturday to finish 10th. Phinny got the edge on Underwood on Sunday as they finished second and ninth respectively.

Fourth through seventh were tight, separated by only eight points. Sodi Kart had its best weekend of the year behind the two victories of ICA driver James Kennedy to place fourth ahead of Birel, First Kart, and Italkart.

EKN Constructor Championship - Stars of Karting
The EKN Constructor Championship is calculated using only top ten finishes in the ICC, ICA, Spec Racer and JICA divisions. Each constructor will count their top two finishes in each class. Points will be awarded with a first place finish earning 10 points, down to a single point for a tenth place result.
