The Bridgestone/George Kugler Manufacturer’s Cup Series driven by Mazda completed its 2007 season Sunday at the New Castle Motorsports Park for the Margay/Racersites.com Nationals. The total number of entries for the weekend reached 520, the highest total of the year and one of the biggest events to attend the NCMP facility. Sunday would wrap up 10 class championships along with the prestigious Manufacturer’s Championship. After the final checkered flag fell, Brandon Adkins and Sage Karam ended the day with two wins each and Margay earned the provisional Manufacturer’s Trophy.
Starting the Finals off for Sunday was the Yamaha Lite category with Tony Jump (Margay) leading the field to the green flag. He pulled out to a comfortable lead as the positions behind him shuffled as the fans along the fences watch Mike Giessen (Birel) and Mark Dismore Jr. (Arrow) come from the tail of the field to the front. With the laps winding down, they both were able to get by Ryan Stewart (Margay) who was running second. Jump would go on to take the checkered flag and the provisional class championship. Dismore was able to draft by Giessen for second on the final lap. Stewart settled for fourth with Scott Ferris (Margay) winning the battle for fifth.
Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Heavy was a two kart battle between top Qualifier TJ Koyen (Merlin) and Prefinal winner Josh Call (Margay). Following a red flag in the original start, the race had a complete restart. Once restarted, Koyen paced the field in the early stages as the two pulled away from the fight for third. Call made the pass for the lead on lap seven and never looked back. Koyen stayed with Call but was unable to challenge for the top spot as Call earned his first checkered flag of the weekend. Third place finisher Cody Robinson (Arrow) locked up his third provisional championship and provisional Triple Crown championship. Dakota Pesek (Arrow) and Zack Busch (Margay) completed the top five.
Act 3 of the Sage Karam and Austin Self Show took place during the HPV Jr. Sportsman Final as yet again the two Birel drivers went toe to toe for another 12 laps. Self held the point for the first 11 laps with the two drag racing down the long straight to the final corner. A copy of yesterday’s two races, Self held the inside line with Karam on the outside. The two again went through the corner side by side with Karam again going in the grass. This time, Self pushed it to wide and dropped his outside wheels and sent him spinning short of the checkered, allowing Karam to take the win through the grass. Self turned around in time to cross the line second. Anthony Furfari (Juncos) won the fight for third ahead of Cody Humphreys (Shockwave) and Jeff Myers Jr. (Birel) - who came up from 10th. With the win, Karam holds the provisional championship over Furfari.

Making his Senior debut this weekend in the Manufacturer’s Cup Series, CJ Lintner (Arrow) has proven to be fast. Running up front in day one, Lintner came through to earn his first Senior victory in Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Heavy. Starting fifth, he quickly went to the front to run with Prefinal winner Brandon Adkins (Margay). They would be joined by Dismore Jr. (Arrow) after advancing from the 12th starting spot to battle for the lead. Once Dismore hooked up with Lintner, they were able to work together and get away from Adkins. Exiting the last corner on the white flag lap, the two went side by side with Lintner crossing first by 0.115s. The second place finish moved Dismore to the provisional championship spot in front of previous leader Kevin Nelson - who finished fourth behind Adkins and ahead of Stewart.
It was Birel vs. Margay, with two former Triple Crown pilots behind the wheels in ICA. Giessen and Adkins controlled the top two spots and pulled away from the field to go head to head. Lap seven, Adkins got by for the lead and was able to keep Giessen at bay. On the final lap, Adkins dropped a wheel to allow Giessen to close in. Running a defensive line down the long straight and Giessen looking for a outside-inside move. As they entered the last corner, Giessen’s engine locked up, allowing Adkins to take the win. Jimmy Simpson (CRG) was second with John Mossey (Gillard), Hunter Short (Kosmic), and Derek Wagner (First Kart). Following tech, Mossey was removed from the results, moving Cy Schumacher (Kosmic) into the top five and Short the provisional championship.
HPV Jr. Lite put on a great show for the fans in the 12 lap final with a six kart battle. Prefinal winner Julia Landauer (Birel) and Steve Nemeth (Birel) held the two top position for most of the race with third through sixth shuffling around. Landauer put pressure on Nemeth the entire race but was unable to get by with Nemeth taking the win. Busch won the fight for third and continued to lead the provisional championship. Koyen and Tommy Andersen (Merlin) rounded out the top five.

As the other Cadet races on the weekend featured a two kart battle, so did the Cadet Jr. Sportsman Final on Sunday, this time, Karam was joined with Tyler Thomas. The fight came down to the last lap as the two would go side by side down the long straight. Before entering the corner, the two made contact multiple times with Thomas coming out in front for the checkered flag. Following the race, officials moved Thomas behind Karam for the contact, giving Karam his second victory of the day, the provisional Cadet Jr. Sportsman championship and the Triple Crown. Self would come home third with Jake Cole (KRT) and Kilian Bloat (Birel) rounding out the top five.
Adkins earned his second victory of the day in HPV Heavy and essentially locked up the unofficial Manufacturer’s Championship Trophy for Margay. After winning the Prefinal, Adkins was on cruise control in the main, running to a four second win. Lintner and Jesse Wirtz (Merlin) had a great battle for second behind him with Wirtz able to pull the outside-inside move through the final corner. Wyatt Gooden (KRT) and Chuck Tate (Margay) completed the top five. Championship contenders Cale Wyse (Margay) and Mark Vielgut both had on track troubles, finishing tenth and ninth with Wyse leaving the weekend with the provisional championship.
JICA was a three driver lead pack with championship contenders David Ostella (CRG) and Michael Furfari (Juncos) joined by Reid Jeffries (Gillard). The three shuffled around the 12 laps before Furfari took control and went on to take the checkered flag for his first win of the year. Ostella was second and left the weekend as the provisional championship leader. Jeffries was third with Josh Call (Margay) and Sean Rayhall (Kosmic) crossing the line fourth and fifth.
ICC was a carbon copy of yesterday with Kyle Wiegand (Top Kart) and Chris Kuenning (Kosmic) running one-two. Wiegand was able to grab the whole shot and stretch out to a small lead with Kuenning continuing to charge but coming up short. With the win, Wiegand took the provisional championship over Kuenning. Cole Mathewson (CRG) was third with Jason Lee (Birel) and Sean Noonan (Top Kart) completing the podium. |
