The 2007 Snap-on Stars of Karting series wrapped up the Eastern Division schedule over the August 3-5 weekend at the USA International Raceway in Shawano, WI. The weather was hot and humid during the Saturday events while heavy clouds put down some moisture early on Sunday to through a curve ball at all the competitors. Several teams had their best weekend thus far as many classes saw first time winners on the year. When the final checkered flag fell, Top Kart had the highest total on the weekend with CRG still holding on to the overall lead.
Top Kart ended CRG’s three weekend streak of scoring the most points in the first three events. The same five drivers score a total of three wins, two seconds, three third place finishes and two more top five runs. The Spec Racer Team Top Kart USA contingent went 1-2 both Saturday and Sunday with Conor Daly and Adam Johnson scoring dominate wins over the rest of the field. Daly also earned the Spec Racer Eastern Division championship with his performances. ICA driver Chris Wehrheim drove through the field for a fifth place on Saturday before earning Top Kart’s first Stars ICA win on Sunday. ICC pilot Matt Jaskol added a new track record along with two top five finishes as JICA driver Brendan Phinny stood on the podium in third both days.
The Kosmic squad at J3 Competition scored the second highest total on the weekend, their best outing in 2007. Saturday saw six drivers earn CC points with ICA drivers Victor Cabrera and Johnny Johnson leading the way. Cabrera earned the victory while Johnson ran fourth in his return to J3. Spec Racer drivers Garrett Olsen and Cy Schumacher ran sixth and seventh, the best showing yet for the Rok TT engine in Stars competition. In JICA, Angel Caban and Sean Rayhall ran fourth and tenth for Kosmic to score the second highest total on Saturday. Sunday saw Richard Benitez jump into the mix in ICC, finishing sixth. Cabrera had an amazing run in ICA to come from nearly last to second while Caban’s ninth in JICA rounded out the Sunday point total. Overall, they moved up from 10th to seventh.
With their best weekend of the year, First Kart moved from sixth into the top five behind Top Kart in fourth. Veteran Alan Rudolph had his best performance aboard a First Kart, finishing second in ICC Saturday. Known for their JICA program, Spencer Pigot earned his first Stars win on Saturday while Phil DeLaO stood on the podium for the first time with a second place finish on Sunday, adding to his seventh on Saturday. Canadian Brendan Langlois finished fifth on Sunday after a difficult weekend to clinch his first JICA Eastern Division title. Spec Racer pilot Zach Beard was fast all weekend, getting into trouble Saturday but bounced back to place third Sunday.
CRG was fourth highest on the weekend just ahead of Intrepid to round out the top five. Tony Kart was sixth while Birel and Sodi Kart tied for seventh. Merlin was eighth for the weekend with 21 points and Juncos made its debut in the EKN Constructor Championship with its first three points.
EKN Constructor Championship - Stars of Karting
The EKN Constructor Championship is calculated using only top ten finishes in the ICC, ICA, Spec Racer and JICA divisions. Each constructor will count their top two finishes in each class. Points will be awarded with a first place finish earning 10 points, down to a single point for a tenth place result.
