| EKN Trackside: Stars of Karting - East #3 - Friday Report |
| |
The first day of action is now complete as the Snap-on Stars of Karting Eastern Division is wrapping up its championship at the USA International Raceway in Shawano, WI. It was clear blue skies with warm temperatures all day long. Each of the five divisions were given six sessions on track to prepare for Saturday and Sunday racing action.
Recently, the USAIR facility was struck by lightning during a storm, possible causing problems with the scoring loop in the track. That resulted in not every transponder reading on the scoring system. Thus, no results were collected for posting.
Watching practice through the day, Jordy Vorrath (Intrepid) looked to be the fastest in ICC. In the final session of the day, Vorrath clocked in a 57.272 lap time, just two-tenths off Phil Giebler’s fast lap last year. Championship leader Gary Carlton (CRG) was quick as well, just recently returning from Europe after running a warm-up race for the European Championships next month. Carlton was one of the many drivers that did not record any lap times due to the scoring loop.
In ICA, Johnny Johnson (Kosmic) is making a strong return to the J3 Competition stable, posting the best lap of the final session for their class with a 58.516 lap time. The rest of the field is tight, setting up for an exciting run tomorrow.
Pit Notes
- A new KG airbox is being used by the Sodi Kart USA/G-Phactory and Team Intrepid drivers this weekend. A few drivers used the “Cobra” airbox, as some are calling it, in Utah but more are running it this weekend in the ICC, ICA, Spec Racer and JICA classes.
- Ryan Phinny is making his return to karting this weekend after running the Formula BMW USA program last year. Phinny is running under the Team Top Kart USA/Kartel tent alongside is brother and Utah double JICA winner Brendan. The former EKN Rising Star nominee will run this weekend along with the Stars Moran and the Stars National Finals, including the Rock Island Grand Prix and SKUSA SuperNationals.
- The Wagner Race Products simulator is in the paddock, giving the kids and bigger kids a few extra laps in the day. The rFactor game and the Eurokart-Sim software allow gamers to race karts at many of the real tracks in North America and across the world.
The Photo Gallery is already uploaded for today with more to come the rest of the weekend. EKN will be back in the morning beginning with qualifying beginning at 10am. |
