The final day of the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series SSC East/CRG Nationals at the BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, PA completed under sunny skies with great racing. The WKA staff and competitors kept everything moving to complete the day earlier then Saturday’s action. It’s been a great year for Arrow driver Cody Robinson, who came into the event with eight wins on the year. BeaveRun would however be his best weekend by taking four wins.
After earning two wins Saturday, his Sunday wins did not come easy. In Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Heavy, a four kart battle early was narrowed down to just two with Robinson and TJ Koyen (Merlin). Robinson was able to hold off the charges from Koyen in the 15 lap Final to take his third win of the weekend, extending his championship lead in the class. Josh Call (Margay) edged out CJ Lintner (Arrow) for third while Zach Busch (Margay) rounded out the top five.
Busch would be the challenger in the HPV Jr. Lite class. After earning the provisional pole in Qualifying, he was disqualified for on-track actions. In the Prefinal, he drove from the tail of the field to third in just eight laps, putting himself within striking distance of Robinson. After running nose to tail for most of the 15 lap final, the two waited for the last lap to begin the battle. Busch made the move heading into turn two, overtaking the top spot. As they went to the backside of the track, Robinson was glued to his bumper. The two swapped positions more before Robinson assumed control heading into the esses and the final corner, taking the win by 0.235-seconds. Tommy Andersen (Merlin) was third with Julia Landauer (Birel) and Colton Ramsey (Margay) completed the podium.

Mike Giessen (Birel) had two wins on the weekend, first in Yamaha Lite - the biggest Senior class of the day with 25 drivers, and the ICA category, which scored over 10 entries for the first time this year. The Yamaha Lite Final was a great battle with the top five swapping positions in the early stages of the race. On lap 11, the group went through turn three with Tony Jump (Margay) dropping a wheel and mixing up the top five, allowing Giessen to assume the lead and pull away for the win. Mark Dismore Jr. (Arrow), the early leader, controlled second while Chris Wehrheim (Top Kart), who was looking for his third win of the weekend, recovered back to third. David Kraeer (Margay) moved up to fourth in the final stages with Mike Rolison (Margay) edging Jump for fifth at the line.
ICA was all Giessen, leading every on-track session of the day. Behind him, Chris Livengood (Merlin) and Hunter Short (Kosmic) had a great battle until the two made contact in turn 13, allowing the rest of the field to pass by and handing Matthew Machiko (Kosmic) second place and Thiago Parazinho (CRG) third in his first ICA race.
It was a great birthday present for Kyle Wiegand, who turned 21 Sunday, as he grabbed the holeshot and led every lap of the ICC Final. Prefinal winner David Carmendy (CRG) was running second until retiring from the event, moving Ron White (CRG) to second with championship leader Chris Kuenning (Kosmic) running third.
Ryan Phillips tried to give Bandit Racing Chassis its third victory of the weekend, running in the Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Heavy class but Dismore, who ran up front in all five classes of his classes on the weekend, finally got his win in his last race of the day. The two stretched out a good gap early on the field and then began battling for most of the 15 lap race. On the Final lap, they ran nose to tail until they entered the back side when they criss-crossed each other in a few corners before Dismore came away with the lead. Phillips tucked in behind and pulled out for the pass exiting the final corner, coming up just 0.021-seconds short. Kevin Nelson (Margay) won the battle for third over Jesse Wirtz (Merlin) and Ryan Stewart (Margay). Wirtz earned his first Man. Cup victory of the year in HPV Heavy, leading all 15 laps over Cale Wyse (Margay) and Mark Vielgut (Haase).

The JICA class had a great battle early with championship leader David Ostella (CRG) and Julia Landauer (Birel) set for a race long fight until Ostella’s engine let go on lap eight, allowing Landauer to cruise to the win, her fourth podium finish of the weekend. Michael Furfari (Juncos) finished second ahead of Josh Call (Margay)
Anthony Furfari (Juncos) was fast all weekend in the Cadet categories. Already with one win Saturday, he came into Sunday looking for two more. First up was HPV Jr. Sportsman where he and Birel driver Sage Karam and Austin Self put on a great show. Furfari took the win at the line by 0.104 over Karam with Self in tow. In Cadet Jr. Sportsman, Self and Furfari were at it again, this time Self showed the way ahead of Furfari. On the final lap, contact was made with no position change but Furfari losing his nose piece with the front fairing sticking straight up in the air as they crossed the line. Minus the nose piece, Furfari was removed from the results, moving fellow Canadian Garrett Grist (CRG) to second and Jacob Donald (Birel) to third. Karam, who DNF’ed in the Prefinal drove through the field to finish fifth behind Cody Humphreys (Juncos).
One driver of note was Dakota Bell (Bandit), who put on a great show in HPV Jr. Sportsman. After a DNF in the Prefinal, Bell started 28th and worked his way to 5th in 15 laps - passing two karts in turn three multiple times. Truly a great drive in his first Man. Cup event.
The fifth and final event of the 2007 season will take the series to the New Castle Motorsports Park outside Indianapolis over the September 28-30 weekend. It will be the first visit to the NCMP course in series history and is expected to be a huge event with all the championships to be decided that weekend. |
