| EKN Trackside: WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series - Round 4 Preview |
| |
The George Kugler/Bridgestone Manufacturer’s Cup Series Driven by Mazda will be heading to Wampum, PA and the BeaveRun Motorsports Complex. The SSC East/CRG Nationals is the fourth round of the 2007 season with a total of five events scheduled. Since being built in 2002, the 8/10-mile Wilson Circuit - designed by world famous track designer Alan Wilson - has hosted many national and regional karting events.
With three rounds in the books, many drivers have stood out as they near the end and begin closing in on the championships. The TaG class has been the most popular class all year long, posting over 40 entries in all three events. One of the nation’s top drivers, Kyle Wiegand had been showing the way each weekend until the Shawano event when teammate Chris Wehrheim got the edge for the Grand Nationals Eagle. This weekend, the usual suspects will be in attendance along with a few local competitors to challenge for the win.
As in the past, the WKA Triple Crown award is tough to earn, and this year is no exception as no one driver holds the championship lead in three different classes. Currently, Kevin Nelson is the only Senior category driver leading two championships (Yamaha Heavy & Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Heavy). Wisconsin young guns Jesse Wirtz and Cale Wyse hold the point in the HPV categories thus far while veterans Tony Jump and Ryan Stewart are atop the other Yamaha divisions.
Junior drivers Cody Robinson and Sage Karam have each earned eight feature wins on the year. Robinson scored seven in the first two events with only one Eagle earned at Shawano while Karam has had win totals of 3, 3, and 2 for the three race weekends. Most recently, Karam lost his first Stars of Karting Cadet race two weeks ago in Utah after winning the first five Finals.
The downside of the year though as been the numbers in the ICC, ICA, and JICA divisions. JICA boosts the most entries of the three and is still providing some great racing with Canadian David Ostella leading the way. Ostella will be returning to the driver’s seat after suffering a broken arm at the Barrie Grand Prix. Hunter Short is the only ICA driver to make all three events, thus leads the championship standings while Great Lakes driver Chris Kuenning leads Cole Mathewson and Wiegand in the ICC title fight.
Along with Go Racing Magazine’s Sean Buur, EKN’s David Cole will be trackside as well, providing updates throughout the weekend on the forum Discussion Thread, including daily reports and photo galleries in the Event Page found on the EKN home page. |
