Event Preview: IKF Sprint/Shifter Grand Nationals

This week, the best karters along the West Coast and across the Western half of the United States will battle for one of the toughest trophies to earn in karting, the International Kart Federation Duffy, as the 2007 IKF Sprint/Shifter Grand Nationals will take place at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park kart track. The organization, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will be hosting five Grand National events during the year, with this week’s event the first on the docket. Over 400 entries are expected to contest the on the seven-tenths mile circuit located just 30 miles west of Bakersfield, CA, all vying for the Duffy, a 13 pound bronze statue on a wooden base.

Things get underway officially today with a full day of practice scheduled with unofficial practice taking place over the weekend and yesterday. Following the day of practice, PKS Kart Supplies and Positions One Motorsports will be hosting a complimentary dinner. Six classes will compete in each of the four race days, half the races in the Junior categories with the other half for the Senior drivers. Two of the classes will be local option classes, HPV-4 Heavy and Kid Karts. The Kid Kart class winner will be awarded the Future Stars of Karting Championship award in place of the Duffy.

In addition, IKF will present the Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence perpetual trophy, honoring the 1978 World Karting champion from Kannapolis, NC. The recipient could be a driver, team, kart shop or combination of and will be determined based on a multitude of criteria primarily based on sportsmanship, competition achievement and professional appearance during the event. The award weighs in at 20 pounds, standing at over two-feet tall. The cup is made of solid brass and mounted on a three-tier solid-walnut base. The first award winner at last year’s Grand Nationals was Las Vegas, NV resident Matt Johnson who achieved two Grand Nationals Duffy’s in the HPV-3 and HPV-4 classes in addition to a close second in Formula Y.

It’s a busy two week’s for Go Racing Magazine’s Sean Buur. He returned home in California yesterday before heading to Buttonwillow today for the IKF Grand Nationals. Buur will be on hand all weekend long to provide race coverage for EKN (depending on internet access in the area).
