| EKN Trackside: Florida Winter Tour - Homestead Group B Preview |
| |
After a successful first weekend for the new era of the Florida Winter Tour presented by Tony Kart Florida, the second half of the classes kick off their 2007 season this weekend at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. After a record breaking year in 2006, the series officials were forced to change the format in order to accommodate for growth to continue the Tour’s policy of ‘Serious Fun’ and plenty of track time for everyone.
The Tour has been ‘split’ into two distinct double race-day event weekends, with Group A running last week and Group B set to run this weekend. Last weekend, over 300 entries were recorded for the two race weekend with 260 entries already entered for this weekend’s events, with the number expected to rise after registration opens up Friday.
Group B will consist of the shifter and TaG divisions of the Tour. The Pro Shifter division is the top level of the Tour and will see many of the top ICC pilots competing this year to prepare for the upcoming Stars of Karting tour. The other two shifter classes are the Masters Shifter and Spec Moto. New to the Tour is the popular TaG Senior division that will follow the TAG USA rules. Becoming one of the most popular packages throughout North America, it was due to join the Tour’s line-up. The TaG Heavy division, which was part of the Tour last season, will also run under the TAG USA rules structure. The always competitive ICA, JICA and Cadet categories will also be contested with the shifter and TaG classes. The Pro Shifter and ICA division results will also count toward the EKN Driver Rankings again in 2007.
After a full day of open practice Friday, the drivers will have two full race days on Saturday and Sunday to count toward the season end standings. Race day will consist of morning practice with Qualifying, Prefinal, Final and podium ceremonies for all classes each day.
Drivers will be battling in one of karting’s most awarded series, with over $57,000 in cash and prizes given away last season and the same is expected in ’07. Included in the awards package is two Skip Barber packages that will be given to the ICA and JICA champions at the end of the Tour - a three day competition course (valued at $3,995).
EKN’s Rob Howden camped out all week under the sunny skies in Florida to get ready for this weekend’s races. As he did last weekend, he will handle the mic duties as well as provide a brief trackside report Saturday and Sunday with live updates on the Official Discussion Thread in the EKN Forums. |
