| EKN Trackside: Florida Winter Tour - Homestead Group A Preview |
| |
A new era begins this weekend as the tenth season of the Florida Winter Tour presented by Tony Kart Florida kicks off the 2007 season. After a record breaking year in 2006, the series officials were forced to change the format in order to accommodate for growth. The Tour has been ‘split’ in two distinct double race-day event weekends, with Group A set to hit the Homestead Karting facility, outside Miami, first.
Group A consists of the popular Rotax Max engine divisions, consisting of five categories (DD2, Senior, Masters, Junior, and Mini Max). After a full day of open practice today, the drivers will have two full race days on Saturday and Sunday to count toward the season end standings. Race day will consist of morning practice with Qualifying, Prefinal, Final and podium ceremonies for all five classes each day.
Drivers will be battling in one of karting’s most awarded series, with over $57,000 in cash and prizes given away last season and the same is expected in ’07. Included in the awards package is two Skip Barber packages that will be given to the Rotax Senior and Rotax Junior champions at the end of the Tour - a three day competition course (valued at $3,995).
Just announced last week, a late Christmas present was given to the Tour from Club MiniMAX and Kart Impact Safety Systems as over 900 feet of custom karting barriers for the Tour events. Club MiniMAX and the Tour have had a good relationship over the past few years and will continue to grow.
This weekend, 244 entries entered before the January 1 deadline for the double event weekend and more is expected to register Friday morning. EKN’s Rob Howden is currently making the long journey from the Howden Media Group office in Canada to Florida to handle the mic duties as well as provide a brief trackside report Saturday and Sunday.
