| Stars of Karting National Finals Preview: ICC |
| |
This weekend will end the six month journey that began in Norman with the Race of the Americas with the Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by the IRL National Finals to complete the 2006 chase for the national championship. All the drivers and teams who have competed throughout the year will head north of the border to Toronto, Ontario, Canada to run on the temporary circuit in the Woodbine Racetrack parking lot.
Through the next few days leading up to the event, EKN will look at the championship race in each of the five divisions along with highlights on drivers who will be in the fight for the National Finals victory. The past three days, we looked at the Junior divisions of the Stars of Karting series with Junior Intercontinental A (JICA) and Cadet along with the Spec Racer and ICA classes. Today we take a look at the Intercontinental C (ICC).

It’s been an emotional year for new PCH Motorsports driver Gary Carlton (CRG/SwedeTech Maxter). Beginning the year under the Trackmagic banner, Carlton took an emotional victory in Tucson after learning of the passing of owner Fausto Vitello. He then went on to take took two podium finishes at Primm before accepting an offer to be part of PCH. After a stellar debut weekend in Shawano with a victory on Sunday, he went on to sweep the Western Finale at Infineon and now holds a 60 point advantage heading into this weekend. For Carlton to earn his first National Championship, he must finish 13th or better on Sunday but will be fighting off three challengers.
Eastern title winner Phil Giebler (Intrepid/Champion TM) followed his format last year to take the Eastern ICA title with one victory and a string of top five finishes for the Champion Racing Intrepid driver. Giebler has one victory along with four top five finishes to his credit. He and Italian Motors driver Tad Funakoshi (Italkart/IM TM) head into this weekend tied with 490 points. Funakoshi has yet to earn a victory with his new team but has four podiums, including a third in Norman. With three victories on both the East and West, Jordy Vorrath (Intrepid/Champion TM) has been one of the quickest drivers on the Stars circuit. Missing the Race of the Americas due to a broken wrist has hurt him in the championship as he comes in one point behind Giebler and Vorrath.
Another driver who has been fast all year is Matt Jaskol. He will be in the hunt with TopKart/DDR TM machine. Other drivers to watch for include Philippe Gelinas (Sodikart/SRA TM), GP drivers Lorenzo Mandarino and Fritz Leesmann, and Tony Kart USA drivers David Jurca and Keith Spicer.
