Stars of Karting National Finals Preview: ICA

This weekend will end the six month journey that began in Norman with the Race of the Americas with the Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by the IRL National Finals to complete the 2006 chase for the national championship. All the drivers and teams who have competed throughout the year will head north of the border to Toronto, Ontario, Canada to run on the temporary circuit in the Woodbine Racetrack parking lot.

Through the next few days leading up to the event, EKN will look at the championship race in each of the five divisions along with highlights on drivers who will be in the fight for the National Finals victory. The past two days, we looked at the Junior divisions of the Stars of Karting series with Junior Intercontinental A (JICA) and Cadet along with the Spec Racer class. Today we take a look at the Intercontinental A (ICA).

As was the case last year in Austin, the ICA championship will come down to the final event with a toss up as to who will come out on top. This year’s chase has a possible five drivers looking at leaving Toronto with the crown.

Champion Racing’s Jess Peterson (Intrepid/Champion TM) currently leads all drivers with 465 points and the Western Division title. Peterson, though not earning a victory all year, has been consistent and at the front, earning three runner-up finishes along with three other top ten runs. His highest challenger is Eastern Division champion Joel Miller (Tony Kart/Vortex). After missing the Final at the Race of the Americas, Miller has been on a tear running both schedules earning four victories total. The 2005 Western ICA champion and last year’s overall runner-up needs Peterson to finish third or worse with a National Finals victory.

Three other drivers are still mathematically in the hunt and with the unpredictability of the direct drives, they still have a shot at the title. Double West Coast winner Nicholas Tonkin (Birel/TM) has shown he has the ability to run up front, taking the pole at the Race of the Americas and earning victories at Tucson and Infineon. East Coast drivers Christopher Larson (Gillard/PDB Parilla) and Caleb Loniewski (Margay/Cook Parilla) each have a victory and will be looking to add a National Finals win to their CV but need some help to take the crown.

James Kennedy (Sodikart/SRA TM) currently sits fourth overall in the standings after putting up big results at the end of the year. Unfortunately, he committed early on in the 2006 to returning to the Rotax Grand Nationals, where he took the Junior title last year and make a bid to return to the World Finals in the Senior division this year. Also missing from the event will be Johnny Johnson, who will be watching EKN from his Iowa home recovering from a non-life threatening medical condition.

Other drivers to watch for as they will be battling for the National Finals win include Tyler Dueck (Intrepid/Champion TM), Eric Morrow (Margay/Parilla), Aaron Neliton (Sodikart/SRA TM), Jake Rosenzweig (CRG/Maxter) and returning for a second time this year with MRP-Birel AMERICA Mike Giessen (Birel/SRA TM).

Tomorrow, EKN will break down the headline class ICC division.
