| Stars of Karting National Finals Preview: Spec Racer |
| |
This weekend will end the six month journey that began in Norman with the Race of the Americas with the Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by the IRL National Finals to complete the 2006 chase for the national championship. All the drivers and teams who have competed throughout the year will head north of the border to Toronto, Ontario, Canada to run on the temporary circuit in the Woodbine Racetrack parking lot.
Through the next few days leading up to the event, EKN will look at the championship race in each of the five divisions along with highlights on drivers who will be in the fight for the National Finals victory. Yesterday, we looked at the Junior divisions of the Stars of Karting series with Junior Intercontinental A (JICA) and Cadet. Today, we examine the new class for 2006, Spec Racer.

Spec Racer
A positive for the Stars organization in 2006 has been the new Spec Racer division. With well over 30 drivers competing on both divisional schedules, it also brought in local racers at each track, giving them the experience with tough competition and a professionally-run event that the Stars series brings to each event. Unfortunately for those looking to be crowned the first ever Spec Racer champion however ran into a road block by the name of Brandon Adkins.
After attending the New Castle event in May and sweeping the weekend, the Ohio native decided to contest the rest of the Eastern schedule in hopes of earning the title and overall championship. He then went on to take three of the four Finals victories aboard his Margay/Parilla machine for the Eastern title and now eyes the national crown. With a 63 point advantage heading into Woodbine over Devon Sandeen (First Kart/Parilla), he will only need to finish 14th to win the championship. Just 15 drivers have entered for the event so Adkins will just have to cruise around, but don’t expect that as he will most likely go for the win Sunday.
Sandeen, the Western Division champion, is in a tight battle for second with fellow Canadian and First Kart pilot Eric Gerrits. Gerrits was in the fight for both division championships, finishing second on both coasts, sitting just seven points behind Sandeen. Iowa’s Adam Johnson (TopKart/Parilla) was the man in the East until later in the year when he ran into troubles at the final event. Johnson thus far is the only driver to beat Adkins and will look to do the same at Woodbine to end the year on a high note and possible earn the number two plate.
Tomorrow, EKN will break down the ICA fight with ICC set for Friday morning.
