| EKN Trackside: Stars of Karting East #4 – Friday Report |
| |
The drivers of the Snap-on Stars of Karting Eastern Division have made the trip to Shawano, WI for the final round of their coastal schedule and they have been greeted by what is likely the best weather we’ve seen this year. The conditions are a comfortable 80 degrees with clear skies. The paddock is completely full with 165 entries on the weekend for the five classes on the Stars docket.
The track configuration is different from last year’s event. This year’s circuit is utilizing the extra track around the outside of the oval and going across the oval’s T3 and back on just before the start/finish line. This is the same layout used during the 2005 WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Grand Nationals
As usual, the Stars crew fired up the timing equipment for the final two sessions of the day and they will use the times collected to set the qualifying groups for the larger classes – JICA and ICC. The trio of ICA, Spec Racer and Cadet will all run in single groups.
In the ICC class, Jordy Vorrath blew away the field to put his stamp on the category, steering his Leading Edge / Champion Intrepid to a smoking 57.857 as the only driver into the 57s. Vorrath ran in the second group and posted a top ten on his out-lap. He then dropped to just north of the 57s and then aced a lap to get to P1. The Canadian then backed the time up with another 57.8 to add some security to his pace. After a tough weekend in Charlotte, Vorrath is still in the Eastern championship hunt, but he’s going to need some help.

Fellow Champion Racing driver Phil Giebler – the Eastern Division point leader – was second quick, leading the first group on the charts. Wesley Boswell (Birel) was third in the order over Keith Spicer (Tonykart) and Josh Schreiber (Kosmic). Former Trackmagic factory driver Gary Carlton is making his Stars debut with the PCH Motorsports SSC Racing CRG works team, and he was 11th in the final session of the day. Current second-place ICC point man Stuart Marsell is 14th in his SpeedTech-tuned BTK Arrow.
The ICA category had Swiss Hutless pilot Phillip Arscott up top once again, just as he was in the first timed Friday practice in Charlotte. Arscott posted a 59.588 to lead the 28-kart field. Joel Miller (Tony Kart) was second fastest ahead of a rapidly improving Tony Loniewski, who is getting more comfortable with his new Ocala Gran Prix First Kart. Eastern point leader and Super Kart Illustrated’s current #1 ranked ICA driver Jake Rosenzweig (CRG) in on pace once again, sitting fourth after the final timed run of the day. Charlotte winner Chris Larson (Gillard) rounded out the fast five.
The day was capped with driver’s meeting before the track owners offered up a free brat fry for all the competitors. The EKN took up station by the track’s pool to take the newest edition of the Happy Hour with Howden podcast, which will be available on Tuesday morning. A local high school rock band took over the entertainment to cap an enjoyable evening.
